    Repair water leak near dormer window

    Dormer window and roof repair never completed

    I asked Homewell Construction to repair a leak in my roof near a dormer window.
    I was told by them that the leak was at the flashing, and so the synthetic stucco on the dormer had to be removed and replaced. My choice was to replace the stucco with Hardie boards which was less expensive. It turned out that the leak was not at the flashing, but was due to someone in the past nailing a board over the shingles and not properly repairing the holes when the board was removed. The carpenter who installed the Hardie boards also nailed a board to the roof, and did a poor job installing replacement shingles around the dormer. His roof repair was redone by a roofer who also applied one thin coat of paint on the dormer after nailing still another board to my roof. He did not seal around the window frame, and never returned to finish the painting. About one month later someone showed up one week earlier than scheduled to finish the painting although the weather report that day predicted a 60% chance of rain. I sent him away to come back the next week, as previously scheduled. He never returned and did not return my phone call. The Homewell workers never showed up with the proper equipment. Not once did they have an extension ladder or even roof brackets. Instead they borrowed my short, aluminum ladder to rest on boards hammered into my roof. The painter did not have a paint roller, so he used a brush which left unsightly brush strokes on the dormer. Homewell left debris at my home for me to clean up, and stored their power washer here for three weeks. They gave little or no prior notice before they showed up. Homewell demanded payment before the work was completed, but never completed the work. Their carpenter thinks that he is also a roofer (he is not), and their roofer thinks that he is also a painter (he is not). After all of this, I am completing the painting and sealing of the dormer myself using proper equipment. It is taking a while since the roof is steep, but it will be a high quality job when finished, something beyond Homewell's ability. I can not recommend Homewell for any work at your house.
