Beware of this contractor. Be very, very aware. It is difficult to write this review, as I do like the owners of this business and have been very impressed with the woodworking products I have purchased from them (In addition to contracting services they produce woodworking products.) Obviously, Rich is a master woodworker. However, if you do a bit of research, there are very questionable aspects to this outfit. This becomes immediately apparent when you go to this contractor's own website. Notice how there is no mention about who is actually going to do the work??? Richard Ohl is the real contractor, the business owner Caralyne never mentions him on the website,
Richard is not part owner of the business despite being the husband or partner. There is a very specific reason for this that I won't go into, but you can google and find out yourself...and you DEFINITELY should if you are seriously considering hiring them. But just know, they have gone through great lengths to hide this fact.
Secondly there is no discussion about their workers...ie Caralyn owns the business, but Rich is the builder. But really, Rich mostly just manages the work in my experience, and as I have observed, his workers seem like the kind of inferior types I often hire from Craigslist. Well there's also a reason for this--their crew is just hacks they pick up from Craigslist. Just today, I saw an ad from them on CL looking to hire a lead carpenter for 30$/hr!!! In Today's economy do you know how much a real journeyman carpenter makes? 30/hr is practically starting pay for a beginner..I pay my laborers out here 30/hr. So if you hire this company, you are really getting the latest batch of desperate unqualified workers they managed to scrape up. Its not really their fault as its almost impossible to make a profit paying the real wages skilled guys get these days. So they had to get creative. But if you want to hire them, its almost the same as hiring hacks of CL yourself...pay them 30/hr compared to paying Caralyne 3-5 times that amount for same exact workers.
As stated, I am very happy with the work they did on my two elegant tables, so they have the physical skills. But when I tried to hire them to put on a new roof, Rich showed up with a few guys with neck tattoos and poor English and spent over an hour wasting my time, only to never return any kind of bid or even explanation for going off the map....that was probably an extremely lucky break for me, and possibly for them, as I am sure it would have been a disaster... Despite them doing this bizarre disappearing act, I have spent a whole lot of time around their job site to witness them for hours on end and it was shocking. This company spilled toxic diesel oil in what is essentially a flowing waterway that flows directly into the pristine mountain lakebed I live on. IE this is a sensitive area for sure. They claim it was around a gallon, I believe it was much more.... Instead of taking action to stop the spread, they simply sat by and did nothing while record rains washed sheets of oily water into the lakebed. Further they drove their trucks back and forth across the spill day after day, spreading it further and further. They spread this oil across my personal driveway where it coated my dogs thick fur and made him violently ill when he licked his paws. My dog could have died.
I really do not understand for the life of me how two such skilled individuals who are very clearly reasonably intelligent can run a business in such a manner. The ONLY reason they are still going is because there are so few other options in our area.
