Bought a brand new home from Joe Baker in 2016 and had several issues within the first 6 months.(pipes leaking behind the dry wall, drywall seems splitting, terrible quality paint on the inside, thin layer of stucco, they stuccoed over the dryer vent and the flooring didn't set and was coming up) Most of his work was done as cheap as he possibly could and instead of permanently fix the problem he would just cover it up with a temporary solution. I found trash, large chunks of concrete and electrical wires buried under the ground that sits next to the foundation. I would never buy another house built by Joe Baker and would not recommend him. Terrible quality.

    Response from J M Baker Homes October 28, 2017
Interesting Review above. JM Baker homes takes pride in standing behind the work done. On every single house built, customer does a walk through with our representative as well as theirs. Any issues presented to the builder are addressed before closing. Also, at closing customers are supplied with a contact list for all trades, we work this way as to mitigate scheduling issues between customer and sub contractor. Are we perfect, absolutely not, but we strive to do our best. To acknowledge above issues : pipes leaking - to my knowledge, we have have a few plumbing issues out of 80 homes, 100 percent of them addressed quickly, we never let leaks sit in our homes. drywall split - even on entry level homes, we use RC channel on every house we build, this is the best way to help eliminate sheetrock cracking, Again, if we are notified of any cracking in a timely manner, it is addressed. Do keep in mind, homeowners need to maintian a responsibility of their own, and this means keeping up with temperature control inside homes. If a house goes from 30 degrees to 115, they expand and contract, and with this cracking does happen, stucco and sheetrock - moderate temperatures. Paint quality - At this level of home, we typically use a matte finish paint, which is lower sheen finish, except in bathrooms and laundry - Again, buyer walks home before closing marking any areas the need work, and work is completed and signed off before closing. Buyer has option to upgrade paint within their budget - Stucco - Stucco is a rigid material - wood flexes, expands and contracts with temperature flux - it is going to crack, especially around doors and windows. Homeowners need to understand the concrete (stucco) on the side of the house is not the water barrier, it is the paper that wraps the home, and the flashing around doors and windows. For a 25% increase in stucco cost we can use an acrylic based material that does not crack as much - Again, we build a very nice home at an affordable price. As a customer, you are looking for VALUE for your dollar, that means for your budget, you may not get leather seats, you may opt for cloth in your car. Your house is the same thing. And yes, do people make mistakes, IE dryer vent, yes, was it repaired immediately - indeed it was. We cannot speak to any "temporary" fixes on homes. IF there is a problem it is addressed, not with a bandaid - Let me conclude with this, and I will use the analogy of the vehicle as I find it useful for everyone - IF your budget for a new car is a Honda Accord a (very nice car) you have expectations for the 30K Honda Accord - If your budget is a Mercedes Benz - an 80K car, your expectations may be different, and they should be - The house is the same thing - If your budget is 250K you should not expect acrylic non cracking stucco - or shiny paint throughout - You should expect energy efficient, reliable, good value, safe, attractive, clean, non leaking homes. And this we feel is precisely what the customer is getting. We as contractors are held to standards established by the CSLB, and every home we build is subjected to the same inspections, through and through.

I would not recommend this builder. Horrible customer service does not stand behind his work. We bought a brand new house in the Homewood subdivision built by Joe baker. Most of the houses built have/had problems. If there was a mistake when building the houses (which there were many!) You were told that that is how it was staying and if you didn't like it, back out and he would sell the house to someone else! Problems arising after the houses are finished are very slow to get fixed. Note to the builder, this is still a very small town and word travels fast, if you plan on staying in business you may want to change the way you do business.

    Response from J M Baker Homes October 28, 2017
Our response to this would be the same response as the one above, with one addition regarding the comment "this is how the house is staying, you can back out." This comment is very true, and there truly is not much more we can do as builders than release the customer from the contract and move on if they are unhappy. To keep housing prices as affordable as possible, we have set plans we work from, as well as set materials inside and out - Often we have let customers do custom upgrades, but this is done at their expense, and they have all been happy with them. But, when customers want "custom" work done, IE custom paint, custom doors, custom counters, the list goes on....but do not want to pay for it, then yes indeed "This is how the house is staying, you can back out..." From our stand point, there is not many more options.
