I do not recommend this guy Jason the Mason from Mt. Pleasant, MI to anyone! We hired him to build a field stone fireplace. He convinced us the best way to go was a fireplace insert then build the surround (Chase) then cover it with pre-cut real field stone (very expensive) $25-$30K. He started in June and did pretty good, finished the chase build then coated it with paper, wire then mortar. We found out later the mortar should have been troweled with groves to help hold the stone when applied, he did not do this. Once they finished the prep for stone we paid Jason for the current work then we had to wait 6 to 8 weeks for the stone to come in. In the meantime Jason injured his knee and had surgery which is when he told us he was going to have a subcontractor finish the stone once it came in. We told Jason the reason we were paying the big bucks was because he did the work himself so if he had someone else do it we wanted him to be there to at least supervise. He suggested we hold off for a few months untill he was healed and could do it himself. A few months went buy and he explained he still wasn't doing as well as he hoped but would plan to work on a rainy day on closing the big hole inside our house that had been created for the insert then plan to finish that so we could at least use our fireplace. He also told us the stone was in and we needed to pay the supplier $8,600 and have it delivered, so we did. The stone was delivered and I text him and ask how he was going to get the hearth in the house it weighed 731 lbs. He text back "good question" and said no more. About 3 weeks went buy and no word from Jason, it's now mid September and going to get cold soon so I text him "what's the plan?". He called and said he still wasn't up to par and that he would have to have a subcontractor do it. I asked if he had been working on other jobs and he said yes, driving the skidder, things like that but couldn't get on his knee to work. I explained again why we hired "him" to do the work and if he was going to be present while the work was being done we wouldn't ask for a discount and we would be ok with being done that way. He got mad and said he didn't need to be there when the sub was there and since I had mentioned a discount that he didn't feel confident we would not pay once the work was done, I explained again that we weren't asking for a discount only that he be there to oversee the work. He said nope I just need to come get my equipment I have stored in your pole barn. This guy failed to finish this very special project he agreed to do that we have waited 20 years for. He left us with three crates of stone, a 731 lb hearth and a huge hole in the inside of our home in mid September. We now have to find someone else to finish what he had started and failed to finish because he couldn't be bothered to be there while the work was being done. Big fail, steer clear of Jason the Mason.
