While I can't speak to those who have had great experiences, if you are a Washington, DC resident, DO NOT sign on with this person. He presented a contracted asserting that he would get my permits that he created through the DC permitting process. He charged higher than general rates, as he explained, because he completes all of the leg work on the permitting process for DC. This is a farce. Two years, thousands of dollars later and several suspensions of my project later, this person now asserts that specific questions asked by DCRA are beyond the "scope of his expertise," which is why the comments presented by DCRA were never resolved. In essence, he has attempted to distance himself from his own contract, which has no limitation on the types of questions he is required to resolve. Without resolution of the comments, the permit will never be approved. Moreover, no other architect will use the drawings created by this person AND despite these things, and my inability to use anything he has created, he does not believe that he should refund the entire payment submitted. Add insult to injury, like others on this call, myself, my contractor and staff at DCRA are all available to attest to the less than professional response when contacted about the lack of responsiveness. So while he may help in other locations, he has held himself out with a skillset that is not supported in Washington, DC. I even hired an outside contractor to act as a liaison to this person to ensure that the project could be completed, only to learn that he also does not respond to the requests for clarifications and FROM THE ONSET OF THE PROJECT missed key requirements like notifications to my neighbors. I will continue the pursuit of my lawsuit and will complaint often and repeatedly to every architect association to which he is associated so that no other unsuspecting person in Washington DC is subjected this behavior.

This was a horrible experience. At this point am going toward legal action. He not only wasted 5 months refusing to incorporate guidance on my own home design, he quit and still demanded Payment. Run away from this fraudster.

I am a BBB A+ rated commercial real estate developer with 30 years business experience. Notwithstanding the negative comments of colleagues about Jerryn McCray, I gave him a chance because of his relation to an old friend. Unfortunately, based on our experience with him I have to agree with the negative reviews here.
In the NINE MONTHS Jerryn McCray delayed completion of his work, he constantly took offense to even the most innocent, rational questions; yet twice we found his conclusions were in error. Overall, his behavior was bizarre, as if he felt the need to compensate for deeply seeded insecurities. When we were able to speak normally with him, we were regularly taken aback by his strange commentary about his casual sex partner or criticisms of other clients.
When we finally demanded that Jerryn McCray complete his work, he attempted to charge us more than we agreed; and when we refused, he quit and left us to pick up the pieces with, thankfully, a more reliable and far better architect.
I would have preferred to pay Jerryn a fair price for quality work and to have the opportunity to do future business; and my door remains open to Jerryn to mend fences. However, at this time, not a single person on our development team, including our subcontractors would recommend using Jerryn McCray for architectural services.
I should also note that in 2021, Jerryn McCray closed his office and downsized to a shared office space. Based on our experience and the other negative reviews here, there's probably a good reason his business is failing.
