Our new JNO roof failed inspection within days of installation. We had an expensive, cringeworthy experience with JNO Roofing and the owner, James "Jimmy" Patrick O'Farrell. For our six-figure construction project in Chicagoland, the builder subcontracted with JNO. The building and design company is only as strong as its weakest subcontractor, and JNO was the weakest link. JNO has a license (but no certification beyond the minimum required as best we can tell), and we didn't expect a botched job. The roof is a glaring eyesore bordering on deformed, and I'd be embarrassed if I were Jimmy. JNO was supposed to use all new shingles, as one does. Multiple roofers (five or six) assessed the JNO job, and expressed that it appears JNO recycled used materials into our new shingles. They used too few and improper nails at wrong angles, mixed brands, didn't do proper protection under shingles for water and ice, didn't remove all prior shingles before reshingling over them, put on the ridge vent incorrectly, used wrong hip ridge shingles (they weren't even the same color), put white sealant on our brown roof - one doesn't ever put white sealant on a dark roof as it looks like globs of cake icing. Stapling was done in places where nails were required. The roof has undulations, tears, scarring, granule loss, scuffing, sloppy installation, and is bewilderingly unsightly. Our city inspector failed the JNO installation out right, so now the JNO roof must be torn off and completely redone by another roofer. The builder agreed that the roof was poorly done and began arrangements to uninstall JNO's work and redo it, and the construction manager stated that his company has had problems with JNO work. After seeing how awful the shingle installation looked, I had Jimmy come over and he was defensive, bullying, gaslighting, confrontational, and aggressive, and he tried to use his noticeable stature to impose himself and intimidate. Jimmy made many false statements (gaslighting), including that the workers had covered the yard with tarps to protect from debris; not only did they put no tarps down, they didn't clean up any of their mess. They roofed in May and it's now September, and I'm still picking up JNO's refuse. Jimmy gave the excuse that his workers weren't comfortable with the roof angles and that the homes here are too close together (if that's an issue, then this isn't the job for them). JNO did no flashing as is appropriate, and Jimmy said he'd have the flashing replaced the next day; this was in mid-May and it's now mid-September and he's yet to return with the flashing, now moot since the builder had to get a different roofer and we wouldn't let JNO near our home again anyway. As another customer wrote elsewhere, it's false when Jimmy says his workers use a magnetic sweeper to pick up metal debris; I had the same experience as that customer, as JNO did no magnetic sweeping here. The roofers left nails on the roof and in the gutters. They left cigarette butts on the roof, in the gutters, and on the ground. They left shingling debris in the gutters, in addition to the shingles and nails now stuck in downspouts due to JNO's sloppiness. The roofers ripped loose our fiber optic internet cable and broke our exterior outlet cover by ripping it off the hinges (they could've just lifted it), and they didn't tell us they'd damaged things. Jimmy said ours was the only complaint his company has ever had, so we must be wrong in what we're seeing (gaslighting), yet the internet says otherwise, and the builder informed us we're not the only customers to have had problems with JNO and Jimmy. Jimmy doesn't have the social graces for dealing with customers, nor does he have sufficient roofing knowledge. There appears to have been much corner-cutting involved. JNO's roofers do not give the appearance of having had adequate training or instruction in roofing work, plus they just don't care. Between incompetence and mean, intimidatory behaviors from the owner, JNO and Jimmy are best avoided.

We just bought our first house and found out the roof was rotten. Zach & Jimmy walked us through the whole process of what we would need at each step of the way (we have had some additional steps b/c we had 2 areas with rotting wood that needed additional work). The team came exactly on time, did A BEAUTIFUL JOB(!!), wrapped in less than 2 days and left our lawn absolutely sparkling. Our home's new roof looks perfect; we could not have been more pleased. We would 110% recommend JNO to anyone who needs a new rough! Don't hesitate - they're the most reasonably priced, the work with you on scheduling & they educate you on your roof needs throughout the entire process.

I recently had some ask to recommend a roofer
I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY this man gave me the run around for 1 week and even said to me
“I’m on my way “and NEVER SHOWED UP never even called me back after this, he did install my new roof less then a year ago and I’m still picking up nails in my yard, so much for his so called magnetic nail picker upper. After a week of BS I found someone who go do the job ( I needed a skylight replaced) All this man needed to say to me at this time was he couldn’t to the job ) very u

Great experience with Jimmy and team. Our new house had a bad old roof - JNO came in, gave us a quote (not the lowest, but did the best job explaining to my wife and I) and completed the project without any issues. Would highly recommend for any roof projects.
