In September 2019, my wife and I purchased an $850,000 home - a house which was built by John Cooksey and his partner Jim Thorpe. The house was built in 2018 and we were the second owners in less than a year. One month after moving into the house, the tiled shower in the master bathroom leaked through the floor. While Mr. Cooksey initially said that he would fix the issue, he ultimately hid behind the work of his shoddy contractor and refused to fix the issue properly. In fact, we now have three tiled bathrooms all of which leak through the floors because of improper installation.
More importantly, (1) we believe that he fraudulently knew about the master bathroom leak, lied to the prior homeowner about the source of the leak known by the parties at the time of the sale in 2018 and "fixed" the issue at the time by covering up the leak rather than truly fixing it, and (2) Mr. Cooksey clearly suffers from alcohol abuse. Mr. Cooksey wreaked of alcohol when we met with him (before we even knew about the leaks, we invited Mr. Cooksey to our house to receive a bid on the installation of bookshelves and other wood work; however, my wife and I immediately decided not to move forward because he was severely intoxicated during the visit), appeared drunk during every verbal conversation and our town's permit office reported to us that Mr. Cooksey routinely appeared under the influence when he visited the office. Our experience has shown that this is someone that does not stand by, and apparently is not capable of standing by, his work.
