    Landscaping (plus occasional other types of work)

    We've been working with John and his team for years now. Our previous landscaper was horrible and had left us feeling burned, so I was wary trying a new landscaper. But the Kohut team instantly put us at ease, and have been fantastic.

    For starters, they're just a pleasure to work with. They're all friendly but unobtrusive. They're happy to work on their own without ever interacting with you, but they're quick to return a wave or a smile. They also work VERY hard. You are definitely getting value for your dollar here.

    Furthermore, I TRUST these folks. That previous landscaper I mentioned kept using increasingly-dodgy-looking workers that left us feeling a bit nervous. In sharp contrast, the Kohut workers all come across as intelligent, responsible, and respectable.

    And the results? In a word, beautiful. When we first moved into our house 15 years or so ago, the yard was a bit of a mess. Now it's among the best in the neighborhood. These guys are not just hard workers: they also have a great eye for layout and design and color.

    Even more importantly, instead of foisting their vision onto us, they have worked with us to find a design that fits in with OUR vision of how our home should work. In addition, we have some unusual requirements such as a certain attachment to existing flora and an aversion to toxic chemicals, that the Kohut team accepted without batting an eye, and then worked within those restrictions.

    While we use them primarily as landscapers, their talents extend far beyond that. For instance, we had some cracks forming in our concrete steps, which they repaired seamlessly. (I can't even remember where the cracks were; that's how seamlessly they fixed them.) I've also recently learned that they do snow-plowing as well, and we'll probably take them up on that for heavier snowfalls.

    I'm sure you could find cheaper landscapers, but I doubt you could find better, and I'm almost certain you won't find better value for the dollar. We've worked with Kohut and Son for years, and we plan to work with them for years to come.

    John and his team are amazing!! They are so professional and their work is impeccable. Our property has never looked better. We have worked with several landscapers in the past and no one has compared to Kohut and Son Landscaping.     Plantings and design, excavation, dry creek

    It only took a conversation or two for John Kohut to envision a plan for my property's front and back yards that perfectly fit with my home. His expertise is clearly apparent in his design ideas and insistence on proper installation techniques. The Kohut crews are efficient and courteous. I would recommend Kohut Landscaping to anyone interested in a high quality job at a very fair price. I'm looking forward to more planting projects in the future.

    John Kohut has built many beautiful rock walls on my property. He has also built a large patio, steps and a walkway. John designed flowerbeds and planted shrubs in my yard. His designs have been outstanding, He is a perfectionist and it shows in all his work. He never leaves a job unless every little detail is taken care of. John and his staff are all hardworking, courteous and professional on the job. I'm extremely pleased that I hired them for the job.

    Walkway, steps, shrubs/trees, sod, re-grade front yard

    Amazing work!

    John showed up 10 minutes early the first time we met him...enough said. We needed to totally transform our front yard and after hearing from four different companies we liked John the best. He listened to our ideas and came up with a beautiful design which met all our needs. Part 1: regrade the front yard, rip out old front steps, rip out old walkway, remove old shrubs. Part 2: install new bluestone walkway, install 30yds of moss rock boulders on hill, install new sod, plant over 100 shrubs and trees, install over 20 bluestone steps and finally, rebuild brick steps with bluestone treads and landing which leads to the front door. Our house is 40 yrs old and John did a great job matching the new brick to the existing brick on the house. He is very particular with how everything looks and takes great pride in his work. The crew is very friendly and cleans up every day. The communication is great and he has been by at least a dozen times over the past two months to check on the trees, shrubs and sod. Yes, he did a lot of work and it turned out amazing! We get so many compliments on our transformed front yard. I highly recommend using John Kohut & Son for all your landscaping needs.

    We had a natural stone retaining wall that was holding up the driveway, it was deteriorating and needed to be redone. We had wanted to keep the natural look and had received a few quotes none of which would have kept the natural stone look but would have put a block wall instead. Kohut came highly recommended and we could not have been more pleased. He completely understood what we were looking for and was confident that he could provide it. The outcome was outstanding, the wall is beautiful!! He also worked on the front yard during the same time frame as the wall. We were looking for a way to make the front yard cleaner looking; half of the front yard was covered in juniper that was balding and dying off. Kohut transformed our front yard into a beautiful rock garden. John Kohut and his employees were a pleasure to work with; we will definitely be working with them again as well as recommending his services to others.
    A huge thank you to Kohut Landscaping for a wonderful job, for listening to our concerns, answering all of our questions and following up with us after our projects were done.

    Replace retaining walls, steps and walkway

    "Beautiful Job"

    John and his team recently completed a landscaping job at my home. This project had several elements that needed to be addressed: a crumbling retaining wall, a poorly planned walkway and uneven steps. His plan had to include the existing brick and stone elements and mature plants that I wanted to preserve. A lot to consider!
    My experience dealing with John and his team was 100% positive. He returned calls promptly, provided a detailed and fair estimate, started the job on time, left the job site clean at the end of each day and finished the job in the amount of time promised.
    Now to discuss the final results, the retaining walls, garden steps and walkway are functional works of art expertly handcrafted in stone and the renovated landscaping is the "icing on the cake"
    John has an artist"s eye as well as the technical expertise required. I highly recommend him and look forward to working with him again.

    John Kohut (the “& Son”) and his landscaping business were introduced to us as we were making plans to replace our 30-year old deck and add a patio adjoining the deck at the back of our 1912 Hapgood house. The deck was rebuilt by Bob Gibbons Builder (see review), and the major task of turning a sloping patch of grass, tiered garden, old unsteady stone walls and stairs, and uncertain below ground structures, into a patio with stone retaining walls, was done by the Kohut firm, with spectacular and thoroughly satisfying results. John talked with us about what we wanted to have accomplished, listened carefully to our responses, and succeeded in designing and creating a space that is a natural and comfortable fit for us. His vision, design expertise and enthusiasm for rock work and plants has given us a delightful backyard.

    John’s team, including his father on the excavator and many eager young men, did a great job removing earth and rocks from the patio site, filling in an old underground space, rebuilding garden walls and stairs, constructing stacked rock retaining walls, and artfully building the bluestone patio with permeable joints (for drainage), making an eye-appealing, well-sized outdoor living space.

    Subsequently John renewed a grass area with sod, framing the patio and deck, and providing access for lawn mowers and carts. He replanted the gardens, moving and reusing many plants as well as providing new ones. Kohut Landscaping does our weekly lawn mowing and maintenance, seasonal clean-up, and periodic plant care. John has limited his customer base so as to appropriately and personally oversee his jobs. He has been highly attentive and easy to reach when questions or ideas arise about any phase of landscaping. We could not recommend him more highly. If he can take you on as a customer, seize the opportunity!

    Excellent landscaping services!!

    John and his team have performed extensive work on my property over the past two years. Simply put, they're OUTSTANDING! John is extremely knowledgeable, and was able to turn our loosely-stated preferences into the front and back yards of our dreams. Before the work was started, our yard was prone to flooding, and the landscaping was very dated. But John fixed all that. The flooding is a thing of the past, and our yard now gets compliments from many of our neighbors.

    I was most impressed with how John took time every day to keep us on the same page. I always knew what was going to be done, how long it would take, and what the finished product would look like.

    We have more work planned for next year, and there's no one else we'd consider working with. John is the best!
