hired & paid them in March 2017 to repair 2 roofs - they said they had 2 jobs before us. I have called & they do not return calls - only get their voice mail. Keith is very sweet & I hate to mess up his work references, but we need the job done before winter. today is September 18, 2017

On June 5, 2017, I paid Keith A Kakuk Jr. (Michigan contractor license #21-01-177464) a $3500 deposit to replace the shingles on our home roof. The contract called for the work to start on the week of June 12, 2017. Mr. Kakuk never came back to do the work. He kept putting me off; telling me he would start next week or the week after until on August 21, 2017, I finally gave up on him and I requested the return of my deposit. Mr. Kakuk did not reply to my phone, text, and written requests for the return of our deposit. On September 28, 2017, I filed a complaint with the Michigan Bureau of Professional Licensing (Michigan.gov/lara), Complaint #334099. I eventually settled the complaint in January 2018, with the return of our deposit and a portion of our related losses. It may be more effective to file a complaint with the state rather then filing a law suit, as judgments can be very difficult to collect. With a compliant to the State Licensing Bureau the contractor faces the possibility of losing his contractor license and also getting fined by the state. I note that other reviews on this site indicate the Mr. Kakuk has previously accepted deposits on work and then failed to do the work. There is also a case on the State web site where Mr. Kakuk was fined for taking a deposit and failing to do the work. This seems to be a pattern of behavior. Needless to say, I would never hire this contractor again.
