This is a review of the work that was recently done at my home. This post will not contain any slander and is a truthful account of a lot of the happenings. As most of you know, I do a lot of the work in my home myself. This time I thought I would hire a contractor. My entire 2nd floor was gutted. Next step should have been to square the rooms. It's an old house. Squaring was never done, as you can see in the pictures. Instead of cutting door frames and doors down, the trim was cut at an angle across the top. Again, see pictures. This was done in the bathroom also, until I told them how to fix it. When it came to the bathroom, I explained it over and over how to do the flooring. I had heated flooring put down and I explained that self-leveling thin set needed to be poured on top of the wires and the wires needed to be completely embedded in the thin set. I came home from work and wires were exposed everywhere. I questioned it and was told, " don't worry, the mortar will take care of that" I told them that it wouldn't. The floor tile was laid anyway. The picture showing the uneven tile was their finished job. Grouted and everything. Are you kidding me? I told the contractor that it needed to be redone. He told me that before he does the floor over, he will pack his shit and leave. Next day, he was back. He agreed to tear the tile back up and pour self- leveling thin set. I told him that I wanted a professional to lay the tile this time. After getting a few quotes of around $1000, I agreed to stay home from work and work with one of his guys so he didn't have to pay another $1000. The first day, we got about 3/4 of the floor done. I figured that after watching me lay the tile, he would be able to finish the job the next day. Wrong. It was awful. I went out and bought more tile, tore up what he did, and did it myself. He finished a few pieces the next day. Pictures show the 3 white tiles that he did. Uneven. He told me he worked on those three for about an hour and then said fuck it. That night, after working a 10 hour day, I tore them up and dug out all the mortar. Not an easy job. Then, I did the tile myself, AGAIN. The next day he told me that he probably couldn't get them level because he had done hash before getting to my house. There were many days that some of the guys came back from lunch smelling like alcohol. The shower floor tile was done so poorly that when the shower was on, there would be puddles in the tile, instead of the water draining. One guy said he was going to fix it. Replaced some tile and it didn't fix the problem. My contractor then hired an outside tile professional to fix it. I was told many many times that I was too picky. Well, so be it. When I hire someone, I expect professional results. At one point, my contractor didn't have the money to pay one of his employees. I felt bad for him and loaned him $600 to give to his employee. He did pay me back. Another time, he came to me and said he was short on cash again and could I loan him $300. Like an idiot, I did. I have not gotten that back. The last day that they were there, they hooked up the thermostat for my heated floors. After they left, I discovered that only part of the floor was heated. Wires probably got damaged when they tore the first tile job up. There really isn't a way to fix it. One of my flowering pear trees was run over and I was told it would be replaced. It wasn't. One of the workers had also stepped through my dining room ceiling that had already been remodeled. This is only a portion of the poor workmanship, but I'm sure you all get the idea. I came home from work almost every night and had to correct something. My contractor and I sat down and discussed all the things that had gone wrong and we agreed that if I signed off on everything with the inspector, I wouldn't make him redo the ceilings that weren't square and I would be reimbursed by him for materials and labor that I had to do to fix their mistakes. The last draw check arrived today. He called me and asked if he could meet me so I could sign the check, take it to the bank, and then come back with my share of the money that we agreed upon. I agreed. Guess what?? He never came back with my money and he texted me and told me to never call or text him again. He also had the State Police call me to tell me that if I did contact him, I could be charged with harassment. My contractor was KK Construction, owner Kelly Keister. Please do your research before hiring someone to work in your home. Unfortunately, I didn't.
