This is not the review I anticipated writing at the beginning of my remodel but, unfortunately, it turned out to be a very disappointing experience. I had met Ken Rogers a year or so ago when I was considering a new kitchen in my previous home. We decided not to go forward with that project but when we bought a new home that needed quite a bit of remodeling, I had no doubt that Ken would be the contractor.
All went well for a couple of months but then I started catching inconsistencies in what he was telling me. My first major disappointment came when I discovered that my beautiful range hood was not vented outside. He had assured me that he could vent it down through the garage. I bought an expensive range hood insert based on it's reviews for exterior venting not recirculating. Could've saved some money there.
The electricians he hired screwed up my kitchen & bathroom lighting. Instead of adding a switch for under cabinet lighting, they took the switch for my pendant light & put it on the one with the overhead ceiling cans. I couldn't turn just the pendant on. That couldn't be corrected without taking down the shiplap & new cabinets to get into the wall. That cost me $250 in smart light bulbs for the ceiling cans so I could turn them off. Ditto on the other side of the kitchen - no switch for the ceiling fan - they took it for under cabinet lights. They also failed to recess the outlet for the microwave drawer so, of course, it didn't fit. There were so many other issues with these guys that I told them not to come back and I hired a real electrician to correct what could be corrected. Ken did not secure permits for any of the work that was done by electricians or plumbers.
The tile guys did not tile the shower ceiling as instructed & when they finally came back to complete it, they threw their tools all over the bathroom floor ruining the carrera marble floor with scratches. That has not been corrected.
The worst part was when I discovered that Ken had been overcharging me significantly for materials from the very first invoice. He billed me for pine shiplap but installed MDF. I found the delivery receipt in my garage & called the supplier to check the pricing. He overcharged me by over $5000 and added his commission on top of that. He didn't have an explanation for that and has since stopped answering my questions on his pricing.
Once I started getting on to him, he ran out on the job & didn't come back. I managed to complete the project myself with the help of some of his subs.
Overall, aside from all the overcharges, his failure to properly instruct & supervise some of his subs cost me an additional $5200 in replacement blinds for my 41 windows & glass doors, $430 to replace 2 ceiling fans with lost parts, $250 for smart light bulbs, & $1000 for an electrician.
What I found interesting was that towards the end of the job, he had me pay some of the subs directly without adding commission. I'm assuming he had already made his money & this was a ploy to make me think he was a great guy. He's not.
