I’m often asked, “How did you get into the building trades?” And that answer, while clear, isn’t a short one. For me, it was a conscious choice. I wanted to make things, specifically homes, and to help my clients create their own personal space and refuge.
My journey began at a young age, with caring and attentive parents, who gave me a creative home environment with lots of arts and crafts. I spent time learning the craft of woodworking with my parents helping in their summer production of handmade wooden toys (they were in education). From there, I pursued the visual arts all the way through university, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Art concentrating on painting and ceramics. During that time in university and since, I’ve become interested in sustainability and how it applies to the built environment and our communities.
Sustainability is one of our prime goals. You’ll notice that we don’t display a bunch of “green” organization membership logos. While we’ve studied and participated with many of those groups, its not simply enough to follow some prescription for attaining a “green” ideal. If needed we can build to those standards, but for most clients, the added expense of certification is not an added value, and sustainability is more than that. We encourage our clients to examine their needs versus their wants, how they plan on living in their space, and what plan of action will meet their goals while being as sustainable as possible within those constraints.
Sustainability is an issue that affects the home-owner, the workers, and the greater community and environment. We meet the challenges of these issues by addressing them with each clients project.
I believe that the workers at KCC should be cross trained in all the sub-trades for the building industry, one, so we can keep control of quality and cost by understanding the processes, and two, so that we can masterfully execute all aspects of the project when scope and/or quality dictate that we do the work. We are specially trained and skilled in installing our own finishes, from tile and natural plaster to fine millwork.
At KCC, we believe that sustainable building means more than having the latest “green” product or rating used in your home. It starts with the idea of home, its inhabitants, those who construct it, and what the materials are and how they are used in the construction.
