By DanJuly 11, 2017Painting, tub resurfacing on house remodel$12,700
This guy was contracted to paint my house. Contract called for Sherwin-Williams paint, used much cheaper brand instead. Painted wood cabinets and interior doors with latex instead of oil-based. Did not redo and did not returbn to do numerous touch-ups as contracted for. Part of contract also was to return and paint baseboards after installation and to resurface tubs after shower wall remodels in two bathrooms. Did not return numerous calls when the work needed finished. Also was paid in advance to paint/stain pergola, deck boxes and planter boxes and two swings outside. Did not do any of the work and did not answer multiple calls on that job either.

I was referred to Kevin's Remodeling by a neighbor who knew him for a paving job. Their quote for the job was $6,800. I should have backed out when I'd asked for an itemized invoice from which to pay. They called saying that the cost would now be around $10k, because when they were itemizing, they realized they didn't charge me enough. But if I paid right away, they would honor the $6,800.
I paid the down payment through the link on their invoice. I immediately received a call from them saying I shouldn't have done that. They only accept Venmo or cash. I told them Venmo doesn't accept credit cards. So they said they'd accept my card for $200 more. That amount was still lower than a different quote I'd received, I proceeded. They said to go through my neighbor who has a credit card system set up. So my neighbor sent me an invoice and I paid through him. But I had to wait a week to be refunded the original payment, which postponed the project by a week (at least I thought it would only be a week). I later found out (they told me this) that they were trying to avoid paying taxes.
After the payment situation was straightened out they said I'd have to wait yet another week for the project to begin because while they were waiting for me to receive the refund and pay the new down payment through my neighbor, his workers had started another job that they had to finish. Once they had my money, time and time again they were no-call, no-show, and a bunch of excuses when I called them.
They sub-contracted the actual pavement work (thank God). The job finally started 4 weeks late and took 2 days. The sub-contractor was still on my property when they began to harass me for the final payment (and literally told me at 4:46pm that I had to pay by 5pm that same day so they could pay their workers - NOT my problem)!! I hadn't even had time to look over the work. Kevin himself moved rocks from where the pavement was going and damaged my sidewalk with the mini-caterpillar. He denied it saying he took pictures beforehand and had "proof". I found a very recent photo of my little grandson walking in that very spot, sent it to them and they never acknowledged it.
They were supposed to move the rocks to my sister's house and spread them around her pool as part of the original agreement. They were demanding payment before that work was done. I withheld partial payment until the rocks were spread at my sister's. Otherwise I knew I'd never hear from them again. When I told them I was holding off on completing the final payment until all work promised was done, they blew UP my phone while I was working and Kevin threatened me (a single 53 year old woman) saying he was "on his way to my house." I was terrified. He did not show up at my door, but I had 911 ready on my phone.
While looking at the work that was done, it wasn't the color I chose. Kevin said they didn't have that color anymore (never mind that I picked it out 4 weeks previous), so one was just picked out for me and he never said anything. Luckily, it's fine, but I would have liked to have chosen something else.
Kevin promised to come back to re-frame the columns (that they tore up) that hold up my pergola. But when I asked about it, they said it would cost extra.
Then the end-all, be-all to this maddening story is the sub-contractor and his wife showed up at my door asking if I know of another way to reach Kevin, because he'd written them 2 bad checks (even showed me their bank statements)!!!
If I shared everything that went wrong with this contractor, it would take pages upon pages. These people lie, cheat and steal from innocent folks, including the subcontractors that they hire. Oh and the icing on the cake? They charged me $20 extra dollars on my final invoice for using a credit card. When I reminded them that I paid $200 extra for using my credit card for the job, they screamed at me to just pay the invoice or they'd put a lien on my house.
My sister has dealt with shoddy contractors before and they hold all of the cards. They can put a lien on your house for practically no reason at all. So I paid the extra $20, kept all invoices and receipts, printed all communications (most communication was via text), and I will keep that info forever as I still don't trust them not to come after me.
I'm just grateful that the work completed is good enough, but my belief is that it's because he subbed the job to a reputable, hard-working and honest company - that was only paid for 1/3 of the job because Kevin wrote his sub-contractor 2 bad checks.
I'm nervous even submitting this review for fear of retaliation. But I feel the public must be warned.
