Knox Septic's negligence nearly resulted in the death of my three-year-old son this weekend.
Prior to the purchase of my home, I had the septic system thoroughly inspected and was present during the inspection. The lid was old, but was securely locked, and the septic needed to be pumped. The prior homeowner hired Knox to do the job. Knox left the septic riser completely unsecured, despite the obvious presence of young children in the area. They provided a receipt (posted elsewhere, along with a video) which failed to disclose the problem, nor did they make any attempt to report the obvious hazard to the building department. This issue was only discovered when my three-year-old managed to kick the cover off while playing soccer with a friend. The opening was certainly wide enough for a small child to fall in, but thankfully I was close by and quickly pulled the boys away before anyone was injured or killed.
When confronted with how this job was left, Mr. Knox claimed that IF Knox left the riser lid unsecured (they apparently do this often enough that he didn't remember this instance) they verbally told someone. THIS IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH, particularly when it was clear small children were nearby.
In addition to their blatant incompetence and clear disregard for safety, Mr. Knox was incredibly rude when I dared to suggest he had been negligent in not alerting the building department or writing the hazard on the receipt. He spoke over me the entire time I was talking, and then had the audacity to tell me I had an "attitude" for telling him "Sir, I am still speaking. Let me finish" in response to his repeated interruptions. I said this because he repeatedly interrupted me as I described how the presence of numerous children's toys in the area would have led any reasonable person to know how dangerous an unsecured riser is. He told me because of my "attitude" he would do nothing to fix the problem (I was going to be charged, of course). It's unreal to me that anyone would behave this poorly. I plan to take formal action with the state license board and attorney general. I have never spoken with someone with such callous disregard for the welfare of children or lack of remorse for the severity of his lapse in judgment.
Addition 10/2/19: My review of Indiana's Professional Licensing records website (mylicense.in.gov/EVerify) produced only one Plumbing Commission license issued under the name "Knox": an apprentice license issued to Bruce Knox which expired in 2005. It appears that Knox may be operating without proper professional licensure, despite their claims of being "licensed, bonded, and insured."

I have three sewers put in, but only one by Knox. They were by far the best, not even close. Excellent professionals. I would use them again in a heartbeat.

We are selling our home. After a suspicious dye test on the septic system, septic inspections were scheduled. Company owner came to property somewhere around 4pm. Boyfriend/homeowner and buyer were also in attendance. I was inside in the room adjacent to septic access. I heard company owner say total septic system failure and it would cost 15k - 25k to replace. Boyfriend came inside and proceeded to tell me the company owner stuck a probe into the ground one time, pulled the probe out, then stated total septic system failure and it would cost 15k - 25k to replace. He determined this after the largest 2 day rainfall we have had this year with a septic tank that was full and scheduled to be pumped and without doing an actual inspection. The following day a different company came, probed the ground repeatedly marking the entire drainfield as well as the distribution box location, and viewing the hole where the septic access had been unearthed. Their report came back with no deficiencies and not suggesting any repairs. This was also before the tank had been pumped.
