I have used KVK Construction for many years and have LOVED there work. We kid because even though we bought our house new we call it the house that Karl built. We have revised many things over the 22 years we have lived here. KVK has remodeled our Kitchen, made an addition to our master bedroom and another bedroom, reconfigured our master bath and updated everything including a Haring Bone marble tile floor lay-out, adding a shower to out bathroom downstairs, landscape lighting, painted our garage door, put vinyl siding on our house, built outdoor furniture, the list goes on. Everything we have asked them to do they have done and more. I love that Karl has an eye for detail and that we plan things together. It feels like a real team. I can't say anything but a wonderful and pleasant experience I have had with KVK and I am proud to say I have a house that Karl built.

KVK has been a nightmare. Before hiring them, we were told by the owner, Karl, that he only does ONE project at a time, he is there HIMSELF working on the project EVERY day, he will work weekends to get the job done, they "guarantee" their work, and that our project would be finished in 6 months. We made one change in the plans, which took less than 3 weeks to be approved by the city, and they want to blame that for the project still not being finished after 14 MONTHS!!! Not only did Karl never come on a weekend to expedite the project (despite being asked since this is what we were told), he also just stopped coming at all several months into the project. Instead, he chose to move onto other smaller projects and sent an employee of his who is not only extremely slow, but also does very poor quality work. In addition to the lies and the poor quality of work, Karl and his wife (who handles the “business” side of things) have a demeaning and argumentative attitude towards others and a “know it all” sensibility that was offensive not only towards us but also our vendors and bank representatives that had to deal with them. Our bank actually warned us not to go with KVK because of how unprofessionally things were handled by them; unfortunately, we didn't listen. Not only is this company dishonest with their promises and rude to the customers and vendors, they are unfit to call themselves a construction company. The quality of work is terrible and we have needed repeated repairs, some of which have yet to be done. We have made requests in person, by e-mail, voice message, and text to resolve problems and they are often flat out ignored. Problems throughout the project have included:
-a brand new basement they poured that ended up full of mold because KVK did not properly reroute the dryer vent
-multiple leaking cracks in the newly poured basement
-delayed ordering of supplies and fixtures that had a domino effect subsequently delaying progress
-Karl took it upon himself to order smaller windows than what the architect plans called for because he thought what was planned “would look dumb”, so we had to delay again to reorder and install the correct windows
-ordered the incorrect size siding initially
-uneven floor staining that had to be resanded and redone
-shower wall leaking onto new ceiling below due to bad grouting (some tiles had no grout around them at all)
-ceiling damage due to above leak/grouting issue
-cracked shower tiles as a result of glass enclosure installation over improperly installed tile (there was no wall behind this part of the tile for some reason)
-shower diverter installed incorrectly, then the tile shower wall had to be dismantled to fix (KVK would not return to fix the tile so the plumber had to find someone to do this himself, though we were definitely better off having someone else)
-numerous areas of the wall and ceiling drywall with visible seams, ridges, and waves. It was so bad that the closet company could not install the closet system due to the uneven walls, the bathroom vanity top could not be installed correctly due to a large wave in the wall, and the crown molding of the cabinets is noticeably uneven due to the unlevel ceiling.
-poor quality painting of walls, ceiling, and trim. Many areas of the doors and trim were so bad that you could see the unfinished part through the brush strokes. The walls and ceilings have numerous spots where you can see a difference in sheen in areas where they had to try to blend the bad seams and ridges.
-brand new kitchen cabinets with damaged areas due to Karl missing with his nail gun. A professional repair person came to repair, but the areas can not be repaired to look like it never happened, so we have to live with brand new cabinets that are noticeably damaged.
-yard drains placed too close to the house and not installed per architect plans
-down spouts not installed where architect specified in plans, which is potentially contributing to basement leaks, as are the improperly placed yard drains.

Some of these problems have still not been addressed. Every single one was an argument and a hassle for us because KVK does not want to take responsibility for anything; they are always passing the buck. As a contractor, KVK should be the one handling the problems with any subcontractors and finding a resolution, but he always put that on us. He made us call and handle the problems with HIS subcontractors. That said, there were only a few subcontractors involved because KVK does most of the work themselves including framing, electric, drywall, floor installation, tile, and paint. This is unfortunate because they are a “jack of all trades and master of none.” We would have been better off being our own contractor and finding reputable companies that do each of these trades. KVK doesn't have the experience that someone who does their trade day in and day out would have, and unfortunately, it shows and we have to live with it.
