Marie is very pleasant, I called her references and they gave her glowing reviews. It was very important for me to have a project finished this month. We had several email exchanges. She said she could do it and she needed to pick up a deposit and have me sign a contract. I told her she could pick it up when I got paid, which was on a Tuesday (8/6) and expected her to start work on that Saturday. She told me she could not work that following Monday and the dates would have to be spread out. I told her "Okay, let's do 8/10 (Saturday)." Now, I had confirmed over the telephone and via text that I was committed to starting this job on 8/10 and expected the project to be finished by the middle of the week. Her response to my last text was "Okay, great, I can be over in the morning or afternoon." Today, 8/8, I had just realized she said morning or afternoon. Hence, I texted her to say, "Will you be putting in the window in the morning or afternoon?" I had committed to having Marie do work on my ceiling and replace a window. To my complete shock she said she had taken other jobs, because she didn't know if I had wanted to move forward. There are a litany of texts that go back weeks that confirm that I wanted to move forward, a text saying you can pick up the deposit anytime after 8/6, etc.
It's really unfortunate, because she seems very respectful and competent, based on feedback from people who've worked with her. However, please make sure you have everything spelled out and caste in concrete. Be very very clear. Like I said to her,"Marie, did I have to tell you ten thousand times that, yes, I wanted you to work on 8/10?" I did not yell at her, simply stated a fact. Her response, "Okay, well I'm going to have to hang up now." really made me think (once again) that many people who work for themselves really don't have strong people skills. It was insane. Again, she comes across as nice and I've been told she's competent in her work , but she is not skilled when it comes to communicating and doesn't realize the onus is on her to get clarification when needed. On three or four occasions I had committed to specific dates (8/10 to 8/13) and said I wanted to move ahead. Hopefully, if you're reading this, you will know to be extremely direct. Like as direct as bricks hitting the ground direct. I'm gobsmacked.
