First job, knocked it out of the park. Got a little too comfortable, relied a little too much on honor system and didn't get the correct paperwork. He's a great carpenter- meticulous, really cares about the end result, but he's a poor businessman and that soured things. Don't advance pay him, do set up payment schedule, and do ask for bids/change orders/invoices in writing.
Don't hire him to do plumbing. I recently paid $1800 for someone to undo plumbing that he did wrong. Hire him to do trim, or a deck, or tile, and he'll do well.
