This was tradesmanship at its worst. I should have backed out when I saw the red flag of driving 2 hours at $120/hr to file paperwork that could have been done with a 49 cent stamp, but listened to Gary's bs telling me that "this is just how we do it here."
I end up having to call to find out that the permit has been approved, my project already delayed 2 weeks because he didn't bother to inform me he had the permit. Next, Gary and his assistant show up late to the job, using a broken threader that added at least an hour to what should have been a quick and easy job. I pointed out I had bought expensive gas rated Teflon tape and he was kind enough to tell me that the white tape cost him under two dollars per roll.
I received the invoice and was charged over $40 for materials, which I provided, save 3 rolls of tape (under $6) and about 30 joints worth of dope (under $3) plus 16 hours. I have no problem paying a skilled tradesman what they're worth, but the job took 6 hours with me doing Gary's job for him while he smoked cigarettes and did nothing, just watching me and his helper work. He left after 2.5 hours saying he was sick.
I wonder how many other permits he pulled in the 2 hours he billed me. I'm betting it was not just mine.
I was a general contractor for a number of years and I know a crook when I have the misfortune of dealing with one. This guy tried to scam me for 10 hours at $120/hr on a quick and easy job. Do your self a favor and steer clear.
