In short, if I had wanted to pay a lot of money for people without experience to remodel my home and take a long time, My husband and I would have done so ourselves instead of paying a contractor.
Job description: We had a few projects to be done the kitchen, guest bath, adding a master bath and washer/dryer hookups in house (very different from original plan), and adding an access door to garage. It took 6.5 months instead 6 wks.
Pros:
1. The main ‘tile’ guy, Josh, was very friendly and cared a lot about the work he did in laying the tile.
2. Ty's mentor, Mike Lemley, assisted on some tricky points in the job and fixed some other errors that the Mid-Knight crew made. He had other jobs but truly helped us out of a jam. Without his help I feel that this remodel would still be ongoing.
Cons:
1.It was like PULLING TEETH to get a WRITTEN ESTIMATE that was VERY LACKING IN DETAILS. We wish we had written up more of a contract before starting work with him.
2. DESPERATE to maintain his REPUTATION. He begged like a child for 5 stars even though he knew we weren't happy.
3. Refused to let us help with painting etc. to keep costs down.
4. RUDE. There was one major mistake regarding the grout color. Ty convinced us to use the same grout color in our kitchen and master bath (linen) because of similar color schemes. The guest bath was to be grey. They put grey in the master. They scraped it out while still wet to try and fix their error. His crew had family obligations so Ty came over to finish fixing the mistake. He asked me to point out areas where I still saw the wrong color in the flooring so that he could scrape out the wrong color and put in the correct color. Knowing he was not feeling well, I let him skip fixing the spots that the vanity and toilet would cover. Yet after about an hour, he yelled at me for finding more spots on the floor. (He did later apologize for how unprofessional this was.) When I tried to point out that there were some problems with the wrong color in the tile of the shower, he refused to acknowledge that they were there and did not fix them. I still notice those spots.
5. CUTS CORNERS and MAKES UNKEPT PROMISES. Ways he cut corners:
a. Ty promised that if we used a two panel door from one of our closets for the guest bathroom that he would replace that closet door with another new two paneled door. Instead he replaced it with a spare single panel door that was dirty and marked up with unmatching paint.
b. Promised to install a bar or our laundry room where we could hang things only to later say that we could purchase a cheap tension rod.
c. He did not fix the cracking grout or missing caulk in areas even though I pointed them out multiple times.
d. Damaged kitchen cabinets during install and did not replace.
e. Cheap plywood used for front and sides of our pantry. and we were not given any input.
f. Ty decided on how and where to put can lights in both bathrooms without consulting our desires. He was very upset with me when I said I wanted a light fixture directly above the vanity. He tried to tell me in was unnecessary.
g. Paint drops were left on our newly lain bathroom tile and grout. They said sorry, there’s nothing they could do.
i. The access door to the garage is sloppily done.
6. FORGETFUL and doesn’t write things down.
7. Used materials purchased for our job on other jobs and was very inefficient in his use of materials. This is probably a main reason why he was losing some profit on our job (something he regularly complained about to us).
8. Left our garage and house a MESS.
10. TOOK OTHER JOBS while working on ours. There were times that we did not see Ty or his crew for weeks on end, even though we would persistently contact him.
*** Get your work done through Mike Lemley. His work is worth the wait and he fixed many errors while working as a special favor for Ty.
