By Kathy C.October 29, 2019Brand new deck$19,000
Hired Lowe's to build my deck and they hired Mongan Construction as contractor. Mike built my deck over a year ago, he was late getting started, always had an excuse, when he did finally start, he had a 13 and 16 year old working on it. Um, that's against the law. It has now been a year and literally my deck is falling apart. Came home yesterday to have one whole side of it detached from the main frame of the deck. Nice work. Do not hire this contractor. I agree with the review up above, when you try to contact him he refuses to answer or return calls.

I hired Mike to build a shell house that I could finish the inside but I've been spending a year re-doing the work he and his subcontractors did and trying to get him to finish the work I already paid for. He would hire subcontractors to do work and he wouldn't check on it himself and a lot of mistakes were made. The work he did himself was mostly second rate. I had to replace all the house wrap and re-nail all the sheathing because he used the wrong nails and the sheathing was pulling loose. I had to re-install every window and door because he used tape instead of window flashing. He also used a nail gun to install the windows that broke most of the nail holes in the vinyl windows. My neighbors still laugh at the misplaced pilings and angled posts for my upstairs deck (even though he had re-done most of them a second time). I spent a couple weeks troubleshooting my water line because it was hooked up to the wrong water main by one of his helpers. I gave up trying to get electrical work done that his brother-in-law electrician didn't do but I paid for. Two sides of the house still don't have siding and I'll have to find another contractor to finish it. He under bid the cost to hook up the sewer line so I'll have to pay an extra $1500 to get it finished. There are so many other things I could add but I think I've made my point. The reason I'm writing this review is because I have given up on trying to work with Mike and also the poor quality of his work that has cost me so much time and money.

My wife hired Mike to build her dream home before I came into her life.
I met the guy towards the beginning of the project (after the concrete work) and he seemed very nice, he’s very polite in person and says all the right things. When it came to his crew getting into the framing of the deck and the home, I was very disappointed in the quality of the work. It was far beyond and below subpar. Absolutely zero pride or shits given. When all was up, I was not able to find a single wall plumb or square. The blocking in several parts of the home protruding up to a half inch past the framing, making it hard to apply drywall. We went up frequently in the Summer to enjoy the mountain views and see how things were progressing… there would be days and weeks that no one was there working. At this point my wife wrote him a very long email expressing her many concerns for a promised home in September. No reply, just a short phone conversation in which he touched upon one point, but not the others. The man literally had an excuse for everything and as time went on and as we met other customers of Mongan Construction, they expressed living the same experience, if not worse.
On the financial end, he lead my wife on to believe the house she wanted would be “x” amount of dollars, but it was ending up costing $200k-$300k more. She would have never embarked on the project if she would have known on her single income. He also took $70k cash from her as a deposit for purchases because he has no credit of his own, instead of being issued money for work completed… in which just about everything he does is partially finished when he says it’s finished.
In an attempt to save face for the guy, I offered to help move along aspects of the build because no one was up there doing anything (I’m a subcontractor; carpenter and heavy machinery guy). He kept ignoring my hand extensions, which would have bought him a lot of clout. For instance, a pump house was needed, which was not part of the original plan. I offered to build it so they could focus on the home and he flat out said “no”. He then got an email a month or two later from the well pump guy asking where his pump house was so that he could finish his job, Mike went on to blame me to this man and said that I never showed up to build it. He then proceeded to email me the next day and ask me if I would build it. Can’t make this shit up and things started to unravel from there.
We then start getting calls from subcontractors saying that they haven’t been paid and that they’re going to put liens on the home if they don’t receive payment. My wife calls the other subs and they also reveal that they haven’t been paid or didn’t complete what they intended to because they weren’t being paid. Although Mike was sure to draw all that money from the construction loan. At that point enough was enough. We were now in November with creeping progress on the home and looked through the contract and he violated his “180 days” to complete the home. He argued this and wanted us to give him 7 days to fix his mistakes to stay within the contract, our punch list was beyond what he could possibly do! One line item for instance would be to have removed the roofing and plywood to add sheer clips of which there were several missing. Thats just one… so we decided his quality of work was so bad, we’d rather pay someone who knew how to do things right and be done with working together.
He kept gaslighting my wife and saying all could have been good if she communicated with him, but all he ever did was make excuses and gloss over concerns he didn’t want to address. He had the audacity to tell her that if she hadn’t fired him she would of been able to move in on Christmas with a house at 35% to completion when he had over 180 days before that. Thank God that that didn’t happen because if he had sheet rocked the house place the long term damage to the home would have been horrendous being that the roof leaks! The guy overlapped metal roofing 2” on a 2/12 roof… I’ve done a fair share of roofing and on a 6/12 the manufacturer recommends 8”. Water was backing up from snow melt and leaking through the ceiling. Also many of the roofing panels have popped up and were not fastened down properly. It is currently being redone by professionals, after already dumping thousands into Mike’s crews work. These guys are laughing at how bad it was done. In the wake of it all we were getting calls from the subcontractors who told us that Mike told them that he was fired because they didn’t complete their work… We heard the same story from 4 of the subs… absolutely zero responsibility or accountability owned.
He didn’t pay the window company after we released funds for the windows specifically and they ended up putting a lien on the home. Anyways… these are just a few of the major complaints… there are more, but I think the picture is painted.
We have a new contractor now, he has been having to fix a lot of Mongan mistakes.
