PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT- Please learn from my mistakes and thoroughly vet out any person you contract with/hire & pay to perform work for you/your home or business.
My husband and I moved from Clearwater to Ocala and hired Michael (“Mike”) Susdorf of MTS Construction Group, License number CBC1251662, last October to build a 3 stall horse barn on our property. Little did I know, Mike’s license was suspended by the State of Florida (for the second time since 2017, I may add) when we signed the contract on October 8, 2019 and gave him a check for $20,000 (1/3 down of the $60,000 project).
We encountered nothing but issues throughout the entire project, which took 8 months to complete (we had a signed agreement that stated the barn would be finished by March 31, 2020 and it was not completed until late June and the only way we got it done was to personally hire and pay most of the subcontractors needed to finish the job and we even had to request several of our own building inspections during the last few months of the barn build). Needless to say, we ended up paying more than the contracted price of $60,000 to have our barn built and as I write this post, I sit here waiting for Mike to do the right thing and reimburse me the $10,880.27 he owes me (and I still do not know if the painter and plumber have been paid, so those may be 2 more subcontractors who come back to me asking for money)…
We have a construction lien against our house (dating back to May 8, 2020) for $7,134.45 for materials we paid Mike for – but he never paid the supplier for. If you research MTS Construction Group on the BBB site you will find an F rating with other complaints of individuals who hired Mike and were also left with unpaid liens against their homes. There are also F ratings/reviews on Angie’s List for MTS Construction Group.
Mike is a member of this group, so if you see him responding to posts promoting his company, MTS Construction or ‘Mr. Fix-It, Inc.’ I recommend you do your research, so you know what you are getting into! We do have active complaints with the Department of Business and Professional Regulation and also the Marion County Building Department, so hopefully they also intervene and help prevent others from falling victim to the same issues we’ve encountered.
I will update this post if and when Mike decides to reimburse me the $10,880.27 he owes me, so I can pay off the lien that’s been on my home since May 8th and pay myself back for the out of pocket expenses I had to incur in order to get my barn built.
To all the honest licensed General Contractors out there, thank you for your service- I hope to do business with you in the future and I am sorry terrible experiences like the one I’ve had make people jaded and cautious against paying you anything up front for your services.
