Mr. Vaught started work immediately after receiving my 50% down and did around half of the agreed upon work. I went to the property to check on progress on a Friday evening and he requested the final payment so he could pay his workers and he would finish up all the loose ends on the next day. Needless to say I was foolish to think he would finish the job after receiving payment and have not heard from him since and the work remains unfinished.

By Randy M.April 26, 2018exterior roof repair work$500Read more
On Monday, March 5, 2018, I advertised on porch.com that I needed a contractor to replace a rotted wooden soffit and fascia under the eave of a dormer of my house. I also said that I wanted the gutter along the dormer roof cleaned and covered with a gutter guard screen, if necessary.
On the very same day Michael Vaught of M.V. Construction responded by telephone to my post, and within the next few days visited my home to discuss prospective work. By Friday March 9 we agreed that for $500 he would: (1) complete the dormer repair work described on my original post at porch.com; (2) replace rotted plank behind the drip edge above the crown molding on a short nearby section along the edge of the main roof; (3) clean and install gutter guards on the gutters along the upper roof edges at the rear of my house; (4) firmly reattach to the roof-edge gutter the detached main downspout at the northwest corner of my house; and (5) tar the chimney and stink pipes above the roof. That afternoon I advanced Mr. Vaught $250 cash, and he and a helper began work on the dormer.
Michael and a helper returned to continue work on Sunday, March 11. That afternoon I was surprised to learn from my wife that while I was away from my home on an errand Mr. Vaught had asked her for the entire $250 still remaining unpaid on our contract, although his work was still far from complete. Nevertheless I foolishly paid him the asked-for balance in cash myself, at the time being still impressed with his willingness to work outside in less than favorable weather, his can-do attitude, and his apparent diligence.
Unfortunately my settlement of my half of the bargain seems to have deprived Mr. Vaught of all incentive to settle his own obligations, and in many ways caused him to behave as if our business had already concluded. On Monday, March 12, he disclosed an intention to finish all work on Wednesday, March 14, but asked me to immediately submit a review of his work on porch.com; I told him that I would be happy to do this for M.V. Construction after he finished the job as promised on Wednesday. I never saw him again.
During the 6-1/2 weeks that have passed since his last appearance at the site Michael Vaught has sent me, by my count, a dozen text messages-- these in addition to several telephone calls-- scheduling appointments to return to my house and resume work. Almost always these promises went unkept with no advance notice, excuse or offer of explanation, despite the circumstance that he'd told me that he needed me home to give him access, through the dormer window upstairs in my attic, to the edge of the dormer roof.
Mr. Vaught's measurements of the dormer roofline were inaccurate, so that the planks that he cut, painted and installed to replace its soffit and fascia are several inches too short, leaving an open void under the eave at its eastern end. The small dormer downspout is unattached, and he never reattached and secured the main downspout of the house; on a windy day three weeks ago the latter completely detached itself from its wall mountings and fell to the ground. Neither have the tasks described in (2), (3) and (5) of the above second paragraph even been started.
