We hired Ben Nelson and Reid Nelson of Nelson Custom Builders after providing him with 9 pages of drawn and written specifications that were prepared with a CAD system by an engineer. The Nelsons claimed to be able to build anything we wanted and assured us that they were capable; licensed, insured, and bonded. We checked with BBB and saw an A+ rating and believed that this was going to be a good choice. Within a month's time we began experiencing many red flags. Wrongful measurement and cut of material; divergence from our specifications, wrongly dug footers, changes that we did not authorize which led to much rework due to the builder telling his crew (young men which included several inexperienced young men; who would stand about talking and laughing for hours as one person worked and the Foreman (Ben's son) stood about as well and talked to the others, as he provided some assistance at times. Their joinings are bad. The ramp leaned after only 30 days and still does since the footers and rock are not sufficient. To name all of the errors would take too long to list. As we brought the errors to the contractor or to the foreman's attention; we were told not to worry since we were not being charged by the hour and that we should just let them do their job-although they were making terrible mistakes and not following the specifications that we were promised. Mr. Nelson did the plumbing. He ran our main water line into our home and it is at risk of freezing and breaking. He plumbed the new water heater backwards and denied that he had done this. He did the same when plumbing the washer; placing the red/hot line onto the cold side and the blue/cold line he place on the left which was the hot side. His plumbing leaked in many areas and he had to return several times yet failed to fix the leak; as he blamed the old plumbing when it was the new plumbing that leaked. He would make promises and fail to keep them. He would not hold his men accountable and would yell at us when his men dropped lumber on freshly poured concrete and did not report the damage; and broke our tractor's deck and the HVAC slab and did not report it; broke our electrical wire to our boat house and did not repair it; and they used our ladders, and our furniture without asking permission, then hauled away our window and denied taking it. They began insulting our home and us. This is showing little to no integrity. They used bad lumber, failed to keep codes, and built many structures wrongly which we are now discovering as new building contractors are coming to finish the job since Nelson and his crew left our site when we asked for receipts and statements to see if he was over charging us since we had paid him 81% for the completed job although he only did 30% of the work yet was asking for more money and stating that it was for overage...and we feared that he was charging us for the bad lumber, the rework that was done due the builder diverging from our specifications and contracted work; changing things, omitting things, adding things, placing things too low for senior citizens to reach or to use such as hydrants and emergency cut off valves. He then claimed that we were harassing his crew when we did not have their contact information and when we had not spoken to them regarding the job; and only spoke to the foreman and the contractor (which is who we were advised to speak to); and when we did speak with them; we were professional although most concerned with the errors and the losses of time and material due to their errors. He would NOT accept responsibility and blamed our home and us, accusing us of interfering and telling us that HE had ultimate authority over the money, the job, the materials, and all; and that we had no say whatsoever regarding our home, the specifications, or his work. We now have had to hire attorneys to attempt to be refunded most of our money to be able to finish our home since not one room of 6 rooms, nor the deck is finished or usable after a year of putting up with this crew.
