Nemec Construction, LLC

Collaborating with a landscape contractor, Chris designed and built landscaping installations, retaining walls and drainage systems. Working with a master carpenter, Chris rehabbed and restored classic older houses in Asheville, where he learned to reverse engineer their original construction and to design from the ground up, key components of what a remodel carpenter’s toolkit.

Establishing his own landscaping and carpentry business, Chris did substantial work in landscape design, specializing in native plants. Chris’s business also included stonework and timber retaining wall and drainage. He studied blueprint reading, building, estimating and CAD at ABTech and increasingly focused on carpentry and construction, his true vocation.

Chris earned his contractor’s license and has built Nemec Construction through high-quality work, solid relationships with clients, referrals, and word of mouth. With these assets, Nemec Construction has weathered the downturns in the economy and has grown steadily in its scope of work.

    Renovate log cabin
    $125,000

They did an excellent job on a very difficult renovation of an old log cabin. They did quality/excellent work, were there when the said they would be, were responsive to phone calls, and were reasonably close on the budget. Very trustworthy craftsmen. Would not hesitate to use them in the future.

    Build two porches
    $25,000
    60 days

The back deck was unstable and the city's building inspector had to call them back out to secure it with extra braces which then interfered with the look of the porch. Poor design from the beginning. The original contract was not correct, they miscalculated numbers and were off by several thousand dollars. When we asked about certain billing hours they changed their story several times and never answered what we were billed for by the designer, Tamara. They also dumped tools and other items on our stone walkway and our birdbaths and broke several things. They said we should have known to move those things but we moved everything they asked us to move. We complained to the BBB and they increased our bill (well after work was completed) to the estimated cost rather than the work they had completed which was under the estimate. We have disputed this and now they say they are going to take out a lien on our house and they are charging us interest. Close to the end of the job and after we complained about billing they had workers come over and stand outside, walking slowly, working as slow as you can imagine for an hourly fee. We have this on video. They are unprofessional, overbill and don't like to be questioned about anything at all.

Response from Nemec Construction, LLC February 21, 2019
The "Deck" referred to above was a mono pitch shed roof on four posts that the customer requested be built on an existing slab behind their house. This was not part of the permitted deck we built on the front of the house, which turned out very nice. The project went over, because the customers sewer line was discovered to be leaking sewage under the ground where the footers for the deck needed to be. We had to dig up the line from the house to the street and replace the whole line. This cost extra. When we showed up to the job, some of the plants and garden fixtures that were to be moved before the job started were not moved and we had to do it ourselves. We did not break any of these items as describe above. The customer had also contracted us to remodel the only bathroom in their house. When we explained that the toilet would not be usable during the remodel, the customer decided not to go ahead with the project. The customers did not want to pay the bill for the extra work they had us do. They then decided to report the shed roof structure to the city of Black Mountain. Unbeknownst to them, you do not need a permit to build a small structure like this that is not electrified in Buncombe county. However, the Inspector came out anyway and requested that we put angle braces on the structure. The customer had previously asked that braces not be installed because it would block their view. However, at this point we had to do it and it did, indeed obstruct the view. We have an outstanding reputation with the City of Asheville, Buncombe County and Black Mountain. We did not have "workers" walking around doing nothing at any point on the job. The Customer also reported us to the BBB. That can be accessed online. As you will see, the BBB sided with us after reviewing the complaints. The customer never paid their entire bill. We did not take a lien out on the house, although it was justified. This review was created to slander our good name. Please look at our reviews online, our web site for a better reference. Nemec Construction is a small company that was built from the ground up. Chris Nemec is a local builder that started as a carpenter. We stand by our work.
