Working with this company was the good, the bad and the ugly.
The good -- We only have praise for Luke. He did a wonderful job with the workmanship, attention to detail and seeing our vision and making sure that things were done properly and no short cuts were taken. He was friendly, polite, knowledgeable, professional and a pleasure to work with. We would rehire just Luke in a heartbeat.
The bad -- Phil lacked communication and project management skills. He kept telling us he would let us know a schedule and no schedule was ever forthcoming. He didn't respond to texts, phone calls or emails. He continually told us he would be here when/if another client cancelled, showing up for 1/2 days and making us feel like our project was his lowest priority. We contracted him at the end of March paying him more than 50% of the total up front (and then more than 75% of the total before the job was even 1/2 finished). He dragged out the completion of our project for 3-1/2 months (8 complete days of work). Things he was supposed to do like get the permit from the city and make sure he had all the proper documentation, we ended up doing. He never bothered to ask questions or learn what was required by the city with regard to their codes and was never on site when the inspector was here. Even having the inspector come out when no inspection was required, leaving the inspector to ask why am I even here. He couldn't even be bothered to give the city the correct address when applying for the permit causing drama over whether we had a code violation existing on our property; that I had to resolve with the city (finally figured out they were looking at the wrong address and they had a code violation not us). He had no respect for our property (mainly a tree and existing landscaping). We requested that he park his van at a certain point to avoid his van tearing up the tree and he continually parked where he tore up branches in the tree. We cleared out bushes, removed landscape lighting and other items so they would have room to work and they still managed to destroy part of the existing landscape, in the area they were working and other locations in the yard.
The ugly -- Phil was not a nice person to work with -- his attitude and the way he communicated made it one of the worst experiences. We overheard several arguments where Luke was making sure he did the right thing and Phil just wanted to take a short cut and slap it together. We got to the point that we did not trust Phil to work alone and knew that Luke was the reason that the project turned out nicely. It was apparent to us that our project was never his priority and that we were always the lowest project on the totem pole. We rarely knew when he would be here with much notice. He would not give us answers to our questions and would tell us he would do something and it did not get done. He was very disrespectful to us and to our property. When it came to finalizing the project he wanted us to pay him before final inspection because he considered it complete and became visibly angry when I told him the job was not complete until the inspector signed off on it. He failed the final inspection because he did not take the time to learn the tolerances and codes he had to adhere to. He was condescending in his tone and actions, especially after failing the inspection. When questioned about how something was going to be done or given a suggestion as to how we would like it done (or a suggestion from the inspector), we were told I have 40 years of experience and I will do it my way. One portion of the project per the initial inspection was that he had to add something like a landing for the bottom step to be in code -- his solution would have resulted in an eye sore at the bottom of the porches. We relieved him of that obligation and resolved it in a different way costing us an additional $1,000 (our decision but he never offered compensation or acknowledged that he was being paid labor and materials for this piece and did not have to complete it).
In the end I like my new porches and am pleased with the final outcome. But, I am happy I no longer have to deal with Phil and I would never hire him again.
