WARNING…BEWARE OF FRAUD!!
My wife and I had the most terrible experience by hiring Nicolas Garcia from NG Wood Concepts LLC for our new kitchen cabinets. We did some research online before selecting Nicolas and read a few positive reviews which made us feel good about hiring him. We also received a couple of different quotes from other companies that were significantly less than Nicolas but we decided to go with Nicolas because we wanted our kitchen to look perfect rather than regretting hiring a cheaper carpenter and avoid the typical “you get what you paid for” type of work. To our surprise, Nicolas turned out to be a total disaster for us.
After we went through dozens of lies and false promises from Nicolas, he ended up just walking away from our home (he literally quietly escaped when my wife and I were upstairs) leaving his job unfinished and, of course, he collected more than 70% of the quoted price up-front before he even began to move a single finger to start doing anything for us. He never returned any of our calls, voice mails or texts after he disappeared.
Nicolas has no respect at all for other people’s time, he would tell us he was going to be in our house at a certain time but he would just show up whenever he wanted, sometimes a couple of hours later, sometimes he didn’t show up at all. No explanations, no apologies.
We hired Nicolas on Oct-19-2016 and paid him over 70% of the contracted price up-front in cash (he demanded that we paid him with cash), he committed to finish our project on Dec-8-2016, he even said that those 7 weeks were more than enough time to be done with our project. On Dec-9th, we discovered that he hadn’t even started any of the work on our new cabinets. The last day we saw Nicolas was on Dec-29-2016 when he mysteriously disappeared from our house and left our kitchen unfinished.
We just discovered that his license from the AZ Registrar of Contractors was suspended and revoked recently due to failure to pay a civil penalty and also for lack of bond (shame on us for not looking at the AZ RoC before hiring him). So, it now seems that Nicolas is only committing fraud by collecting cash up-front (which is more than the usual deposit asked by any other carpenter) and not honoring his agreement by doing the job he was contracted to do.
In addition, his workmanship quality is not good. For the only cabinets he was able to do for us, Nicolas didn’t use the high quality materials he promised to use, the wood is not straight or flat, all of the door frames are wavy, the paint was not applied correctly, even you can see some of the original wood bleeding through the paint, a couple of drawers had different paint (he used caulk to cover some holes which looked very different from the painted cabinet), he cracked some of the cabinets by using very long screws, some pieces of wood in the drawers separated from each other, etc. This all seems to be the consequence of just doing a quick rush job last minute. He actually used nails to attach the drawer’s face to the drawers, and when I questioned him about that he said that they were going to be fixed and unnoticeable but I can still see two holes very clearly on the front for every single one of our drawers.
When Nicolas removed our old cabinets, he left us with no kitchen for more than a week; we couldn’t use our microwave or our stove during this time. In addition, we were supposed to host Christmas and New Years for our families and those plans were completely ruined by Nicolas since the kitchen was a total mess.
The most expensive parts of our project were the glass doors in our upper cabinets for which he lied several times saying they were all ready but when we went to his shop we discovered they had not been even started at all. The day before Nicolas disappeared he promised to install the glass doors, crown moldings and fix all his defective work but he never did. It all appears that the glass doors were never made, he never showed any sort of proof that he actually made these doors or sub-contracted the glass portion. Minutes before he disappeared, he even had the audacity to ask for the little remaining balance of the contracted price that was due at the completion of the project.
We would’ve wished to be warned by someone else before hiring Nicolas but unfortunately it was us that ended up having this awful experience with such a fraudulent man and so it is now our civil duty to share this with anyone thinking of hiring Nicolas in the future. We will be proceeding with further legal actions on this case since Nicolas has not made any attempt to respond to any of our calls or texts.
We’re completely willing to open our home to anyone interested in stopping by to see up close the conditions of Nicolas’ incomplete and defective work.
