We hired Peter Maio of P&C Maintenance to build an addition on our house with an 8-12 week quoted timeline. Peter repeatedly lied to us, did work that did not comply with building code, and ultimately walked off the job more than a year after beginning the project.
This review summarizes some of the many examples of problems we encountered with Peter, but serves to show the character of the man and the quality of the workmanship.
1. A wall was constructed on an angle severe enough that we had to pay for a structural engineer to review it and provide a design to reinforce it.
2. Peter repeatedly asked for final payment long before the work was done (and ultimately never did finish even after being paid in full).
3. Peter asked for and received payment for extending our existing deck. After weeks of delays, he claimed that the design provided by our architect did not meet code, and that none of his builders were willing to do the work. Instead, we would have to demo and rebuild the existing deck (which would be much more expensive). We reached out to one of his builders for clarification on the code issue (since Peter wouldn't answer our question identifying the code issue) and were informed that this was a lie: he had told Peter he was available to build the deck and was waiting on the go ahead from Peter. Our town inspector also confirmed that the proposed extension complied with building codes.
4. Peter refused to include several critical components on the new deck that are required by building codes (and told me, when both I and his builders questioned it, "we'll do it this way and see if the building inspector catches it"). After it failed inspection, he asked for extra money to make it code compliant and then walked off the job.
5. Footings were placed in completely the wrong location a total of 3 times and each time had to be redug and poured/repoured.
6. Peter asked for and received payment for our siding with the promise that he would, the following week, install said siding on the addition. After a month of delays, he told us that the type of siding used on the rest of the house is no longer made. He claimed that we would have to put new siding on the entire house if we wanted it to match, which would be much more expensive. It took us just 15 minutes to find a major provider who carried the siding we had original requested.
