I worked with Mr. Payton for months, trying to get a quote on a building project, an insulated two-story workshop with a bathroom. I asked him numerous times for estimates, quotes, anything that would indicate we could pursue a project.
I have worked with numerous professionals who know their business. Providing estimates for each component of a project is fundamental. Hard numbers follow, but experienced pros know what things cost. It should have taken a couple days. Instead, Mr. Payton continued to bring subcontractors (electric, plumbing, septic, foundation, etc.) to my property to develop, purportedly, quotes so that he could develop an estimate. I met with Mr. Payton and the subs numerous times. I spoke on the phone and exchanged emails many times, constantly seeking some parameters and options for the building. I never got a hint of costs or options though I brought up ideas and options a number of times. Despite all of the meetings with subcontractors, Mr. Payton was never able to provide any options, concrete numbers, estimates, or wild guesses.
I had to follow up with Mr. Payton repeatedly to get him to continue engaging. After weeks of silence, I would call and get a story explaining why he wasn't doing anything. The excuse I heard most often was that someone he didn't know was stalking him and that made his wife upset with him.
After months of this and the last contractor reviewed the job, Mr. Payton told me he would be finishing all of his calculations the following weekend and then he would get with me to make final decisions. I never heard from him again. I was tired of continuing to contact him to prompt him to get things done. I didn't want to hear him tell me once more that this woman he didn't know made life so difficult that he couldn't add up a list of numbers provided by all the subcontractors. So I waited. And waited. He never called or emailed to share anything - a quote, an explanation, nothing.
I saw him at a community event a couple months later. As I moved toward him he turned away and pretended he didn't see me. Maybe that stalker was there and he was distracted.
