BEWARE!
We met Steve on 10/11/19 to discuss replacing our old concrete stairs and landing. The job would require removing the old concrete stairs, pour a new foundation and lay granite treads and landing on top. Treads and landing were supplied by us. The project was 4 steps to a landing, with 4 steps to the left and 6 steps to the right, up to a breezeway. Due to the complexity, a detailed drawing, including step rise and run was provided.
After discussion, we agreed to some minor changes. He seemed to understand the scope of the job and was confident we would be happy with his work. He quoted us $3400. We liked him and hired him.
Tues, 10/15 we gave him a $1500 deposit, with an updated drawing and he started the job by jack hammering the old steps. Demo was completed on the first 6 steps, new step foundation was poured and complete Sat. 10/19. He did a beautiful job forming and pouring these steps, but we noticed something was off that evening. After checking, we found the rise was incorrect and an extra step was added. The plan called for a 7” rise. The steps were poured with 5.5” rise. We contacted Steve Sunday. After some discussion he realized his mistake.
On Monday, 10/21 he returned to review the situation. We discussed possible modifications without removing the new poured steps. In the end he decided it would be best to jack hammer it all, make a new form and re-pour. We appreciated that he wanted to make it right.
He had some other business and would need a couple days before he could come back. I texted him on Sat, 10/26 to check in. On Monday he responded that he’d be back towards the end of the week. That was the last time we heard from him, after many attempts by us. We were patient, reasonable and seemed to have a good repour with him.
It’s very sad that we trusted him, liked him and were deceived. He knew this was his mistake. He even abandoned some of his equipment here. Maybe he thought it was worth what we gave him for a deposit. It’s not and we have no use for it. We are out $1500 and now need to spend more money to correct his mistake. He has no integrity!
