    Build a home

I am going to agree with all the negative comments. Super at deception. Super at Conning people.
Bottom line they took our money, we have no home, there are many judgements against Scott and Pillar. They do not follow the laws in Wisconsin. Our money was to be put into a seperate account, only used on our project. So..... where is my Money? My house? I have dirt. Run, run fast, run far.

    Nothing
    $1

My wife and I contacted Scott (owner) in June of 2021 for a home construction project.
We met with him to discuss our project and provided general plans of what we wanted.
He said he would have something drawn in a week or two. That was the 1st of several lies told by him both on the phone and in emails.
Long story short we wasted our entire construction season waiting on this poshished liar.
Run don't walk form these people They will lie to you, string you along, waste months of your time.
If anyone has questions or would like to see the emails to prove what im saying comment an email and I'll send them to you.
Again run don't walk from considering contacting these people.

    Build a house
    $270,000

I would strongly not recommend Pillar Construction Group to build a house. When my wife and I first met with Scott(owner) and Carl(project manager) we really liked them. They sold us on the fact that they run their business like a family and they treat their clients as such. They seemed honest, and it appeared that they did quality work. Short story: they said they would build our house for $270,000, the official price came back at $340,000 after we gave them $1500 which they did not give back. For long story read on:
We had them draw up plans for our home, it was around 1800 sqft, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths. After we had the plans drawn up I asked Scott to get us a price for the house. He told us that it would a maximum of $270,000 for everything that we would need but in order to get us exact pricing we had to give them $1500 to send their plans into an engineer to sketch out the final drawings. We decided to give them the $1500 since $270,000 fit into our budget. ($270,000 was our max budget)
Since $270,000 was at the max of our budget I talked with Carl about the possibility of building up(adding the second story) with the house. I had made up a rough draft of the house we put two of the bedrooms and one of the bathrooms upstairs over the top of the master bedroom and mudroom. He said that you could save money by building up but recommended sending in the original plan to the engineer since this was our dream home and getting pricing. I agreed with him and had signed off on the original plans to go to the engineer.
About a week later we met with Carl to pick out different options for siding, shingles, cabinetry, etc. I brought up the idea of building up to Carl, I asked him if it would be a good idea to start sketching out the plans to build up just in case we would need to to keep the cost down. I thought that this would be a good idea to do because it took them a long time to get our original sketches done to send into the engineer. The engineer was six weeks out so I thought it would be good to be proactive and start planning ahead just in case. He said that he could do that and he started working on the preliminary sketches. After he completed the preliminary sketch for the plan to build up he had the second story in the wrong location. He put it above the living room area where we wanted to put vaulted ceilings. About two weeks later we got the plans back from the engineer, they were the wrong plans. It was the preliminary sketch of the plan to build the second story house--where the two bedrooms were above the living room, not the master bedroom.--not the plan that we originally signed off on to go to the engineer.
At this point we felt pressured to make decisions fast. Carl had started re-sketching the plans to build up, when we showed up to view the plans they were not good. The roofline went from the top of the second story all the way down past the garage and he added over 200 sqft to the house. At this point, we decided to take a break from things because nothing was going right and we were going on vacation the next week. At this time we found some other plans that were less square footage, eliminated one bedroom, and had a simpler roof-line. After we got back from vacation we had Carl draw this up and send it to the engineer to get pricing. After we got pricing back it was $70,000 higher then what Scott had told us, this was after reducing the square footage and making the roof-line simpler. Scott blamed it on the fact that we kept adding things to the house which was not true and that his contractors didn’t want to drive that far to do work--he knew of the location when he told us his original price. Scott said that he was going to try to work with us because he didn’t want to lose us as a client, he told us that he would contact some local contractors to give us a better price and would get back to me. After six weeks I didn’t hear anything from Scott, I left him voicemails and nothing. I finally got in touch with him and told him that I wanted my money back, he said he would call me back the next week and I never heard back from him.
Some other things that went wrong along the way: 1. I built a shed and ordered siding through them so it would match the house. When I went to install it they had switched siding without telling us. We picked out “natural slate” which is a rich gray and we got “pacific blue” which is you guessed it-blue. I talked to Carl about this, he said he was worried about the siding that we picked out not being available when we would build so he picked out something else(without our consent). He said that there is bluer it in than he thought when he made the change. 2. We were constantly told that they would have x,y, and z to us or done by a certain day. They were always a week late and would have x done, y would be forgotten and z would be done wrong, this happened several times.
Do not waste your time and money on Pillar Construction.

Hello Mr. Schneider It is unfortunate that our business relationship has ended this way. We have a few points that we would like to discuss with our readers, so they have a full and accurate picture of your dissatisfaction of our business. In response to your comments on our initial meeting with you, a floor plan was discussed, and budget was talked about. We started the process of designing a custom home. And yes, we were confident with the first discussion that we could meet your budget of 270K We were upfront with you in explaining our design process and how our company works. We can estimate a ball park figure based on past builds, cost per square foot. Before we were able to get you a closer price, the plans must be engineered and selections for the home must be made. The design process in this instance was far from streamlined or simple. We have in your file that you changed the entire design and had a total of 4 different houses that we drew up and worked on in house, all at no charge. Not to mention the small changes that we made for you. We feel this is the cost of doing business and working with the customer. We have on file a design agreement, signed by you. The agreement stated very clearly as well as verbal discussions, that your money was not refundable as the engineer is involved at this point in the process. When plans are sent to the engineer, we are charged fees and we are not able to eat that cost. Typically, we would have charged a larger design fee because of the square footage of the home you requested to have engineered. Typically, we allow a customer to send in for revisions on a home 2 times before we charge an additional fee. We sent in two different homes to the engineer, however, we did not charge you the extra fees. With the final floor plan from the engineer, yes, your home came in around $340k. That was entirely driven by you, the floor plan and selections. Our confidence in the initial ball park number was for the initial sketch that was discussed, as well as standard selections. At the end of it all you did not work with an Architect to purchase “For construction plans”. Per the design agreement Pillar Construction still owns the full rights to these final plans you are using for construction for you new home. We cannot speak for the other contractors you received bids from, but they would not be able to compare apples to apples without a copy of this latest plan set and copy of the home selection guide… Thank you for your time and good luck to you on your future build.

    Build our forever home.
    $329,000

I would sincerely discourage building your dream home with this company. We built our home with them and it was their first entry in the 2017 parade of homes. So many changes were made to our home without our consent or approval. They rushed to get it done for the parade and told us they would change or fix them after the event. Now almost a year later we are still waiting for them to finish these things. They are excellent at saying yes to what you want, but then do what they want instead. I don’t want anyone else to have the same experience we had. Be sure EVERY SINGLE thing is in writing. Our home is Beautiful, it just is NOT what we wanted!

We as a team, are very sorry this has come to this point. As the building process went along, we all know that we got along great. We shared lots of hugs, a few tears, much laughter and built a very nice relationship with each other. “Family” is what we said to each other. In the middle of the process, the plans were drawn & finalized. The tile, cabinets, electrical, plumbing, the flooring & all color choices were all chosen. Everything was set. After the contract was signed with Pillar Construction, the Hanson’s informed us they were going to hire an Interior Designer to help with staging furniture for the parade. To our surprise, the interior decorator made some very major changes: Electrical was changed, the plumbing was changed, the interior trim was actually halted on the production line, the counter tops, backsplash tile added to the kitchen, tile was added in all 3 bathrooms & laundry room. We also accommodated a request to using a jacuzzi tub that was used by the Hanson’s mother, causing our plumber to make several extra trips to find working parts. Pillar accommodated all of these requests and worked with the designer and the Hanson’s without hesitation. Pillar was asked to enter your home in the Parade of Homes 2017. We strongly encouraged you to get these changes finalized, knowing we only had 65 days before the Parade of Homes. Pillar was very proud to say, we still met every dead line that we were faced with in that 65 days. The weekend of the Parade of Homes it is very typical to be doing last minute touch ups. Before a homeowner can move in, we always do a punch list with the home owner, finalize paperwork and receive final payment from the home owner. Sunday evening, immediately following the Parade, the Hanson family moved into the house. There was no occupancy permit as of yet, the final bill wasn’t paid, and we were not able to walk through the house together to complete the final punch list. We all knew there were things that needed to be touched up or completed but agreed to get things finalized within the next month or so. Once a homeowner moves in, our construction schedule is very limited because now a family is living in the home, personal belongings are in the way and Pillar must make appointments to allow the subcontractors in the house. The Hanson’s were out of town with a very busy schedule. To address the substituting of products: The Interior Designer was requesting certain tiles and plumbing fixtures to be used. However, the fixtures that were chosen did not fit with the plumbing that was already in behind the wall, as well as missing pieces provided by the Interior Designer. The tile that was requested to be used cost 3 times more than what Pillar had originally quoted in the signed contract, thus the Hanson family agreed to go with the lesser cost. Every subcontractor (except one) has been paid and paperwork collected, including lien waivers that are filed with the title company. The only contractor that has not been paid is the flooring and tile contractor because the Hanson’s requested we hold payment until they fixed an issue with the shower tile. This has been resolved but payment has not been collected from the Hanson’s Pillar has had a lot of contact with the Hanson’s about the things that need to be addressed, however it has proven difficult to get into the home because of the Hanson’s work schedules, vacations and family time. One of Pillar’s biggest concerns is not being paid the final draw, which is a very hefty amount. Pillar Construction would love the opportunity to finalize this home. We know at one point that you were a very satisfied customer. Because before you moved into the home we were all there together working as a team. You told every contractor how happy you were with the home. Pillar Construction would like to clarify that we want to go over the punch list with you in a timely manner and have all items completed, as well as pay us what is due so there are no hard feelings on either side.

I live in Eau Claire and I had a fire damage in my home. I am very pleased with the work that Pillar Construction did to get my home back up and running. Feels like a new home. They worked with my insurance company and things moved along very smoothly. Thank you again for all the great work you did. I would highly recommend them.
