Avoid Piotr Pomainek and Pomian Tiles at All Costs!
I hired Piotr for a guest bathroom remodel, and the entire experience was terrible for 20 days, including two weeks during which he didn’t show up and only texted to ask for his tools. Piotr showed a complete lack of respect for my home, entering with shoes covered in paint and other materials.
From the outset, Piotr never provided a written proposal or contract for the project. Instead, he offered a vague estimate that included statements like "ALL plumbing work, ALL electrical work, full tiling of all four walls, a complete shower with expert waterproofing, and installation of the toilet and vanity." We agreed on the scope of work and the price, but despite my reservations, he convinced me that obtaining a permit was unnecessary. This turned out to be a major mistake.
After the fiasco of a 24-hour waterproofing test, I had several other contractors inspect the work, which revealed its poor quality and numerous non-functional aspects. Without a permit, I was unable to have the city inspect Piotr’s subpar work after I asked him to halt the project and refund my money in full.
BuildZoom assisted me in finding a qualified contractor by streamlining the process and connecting me with reputable professionals. However, many contractors declined to take on the project, stating their insurance wouldn’t cover the work at this stage.
On the first day, Piotr’s initial contractor arrived, but Piotr attempted to manipulate the situation by proposing to cut corners and reduce the scope of work. He claimed that only tiling the shower area and painting the remaining walls would enhance the overall appearance. This approach raised serious concerns about his commitment to delivering the quality we had agreed upon, especially since I had already purchased the natural stone for the walls. At that moment, I recognized it as a significant red flag regarding both his dedication to the project and his deceptive character.
The plumbing work was scaled back without my knowledge or consent. I later discovered that they had excluded the plumbing behind the toilet, which had been identified as the main issue in the water mitigation company’s report. Piotr demanded an additional $600 for that plumbing work and gave directives to his subcontractor. Additionally, the plumbing for the showerhead was incorrectly installed, and the sink height was not adjusted properly. Overall, the plumbing setup was substandard, with installations that didn’t even function. The materials used were the cheapest available, and the plumbing and electrical work were both incomplete and not up to city code standards.
His subcontractors were equally incompetent. It was distressing to watch them struggle for four hours to install a bathroom fan, blaming the unit and sending me back to the store to exchange it. In stark contrast, a new contractor successfully installed the same fan in just one hour, utilizing all its features.
Piotr is quite the braggart. During our conversation, I asked him to halt the work and refund my $5,000 deposit. He insisted that I come to see a project he was supposedly working on, attempting to portray himself as a high-quality handyman by boasting about his involvement in large, expensive jobs. However, I felt no need to visit; the poor quality of his work was already evident in my bathroom.
Let me elaborate on the 24-hour waterproofing test fiasco. The test was a disaster. I was extremely stressed and visited tile stores to consult with professionals, showing them pictures and videos of water pooling in the shower pan. I researched online how the test should be conducted and when it needed to be checked after dumping the water. Six days after Piotr poured water in the shower pan for the flood test, he returned. When I reported the pooling water and leakage, his response was, “Your shower floor will always be wet.” I rephrased my question multiple times, but he repeated the same dismissive answer.
Having water sit in the pan caused leaks and damage, forcing the new contractor to spend extra time drying out and replacing damaged wood and other materials.
While I stood just a few feet away, Piotr was on speakerphone chatting with a woman in Polish and mimicking me in a female voice—this occurred just a minute after I handed him a cold beverage on a hot day. This kind of disrespect is utterly unacceptable.
In contrast, the new contractor worked diligently and patiently addressed my concerns. Ultimately, they transformed the space into a masterpiece, treating me with the respect I deserved as a customer.
Piotr has proven to be unprofessional and unreliable, and I regret not trusting my instincts sooner. It has now been over three months since we agreed he would refund my payment at Pomian Tiles, yet he has failed to respond to my calls and voicemails. His actions have ruined our summer and resulted in significant additional costs due to damages and work that didn't meet city code standard
