I left an honest review on Potts Electrical's Facebook page, but it was removed because it was an unfavorable review. I had to rate this electrician 1 star just to submit a review. On Tuesday, April 26, 2016, my husband sent a text asking Bob to call him regarding the numerous problems we found with the electrical work he had done at our house. Although Bob has sent a check as a “refund”, he still has not had the decency to respond to my husband, so I have outlined the problems we have found to date:
1. Bob tied wires together in the Family Room ceiling that were not in a box and had no cap on the ground, which is not only against code, but dangerous as he pointed out based on what the previous owners had done.
2. Bob told us he did the wiring for “free” in the attic because of our referrals, but he actually removed a wire my husband had run to the attic fan for him to connect. This was probably the most disappointing of all given we trusted Bob and this was a deliberate deception.
3. Bob installed 6 circuits in the circuit panel that were not needed and charged per circuit. Three of these were 20-amp circuits with two of them only having two plugs each and the other one only had the kitchen overhead lights.
4. Bob labeled one circuit "Lights", but it did not have any wires connected to the circuit breaker; therefore charging us for a circuit that was never installed.
5. We found two connections in the basement where the wires were loose, not in a box, and coiled up in the joists.
6. To date, we have found five ungrounded switches in plastic boxes.
7. Bob left us with one 15 amp circuit for the garage, kitchen pendant lights, office, mudroom, and outside lights, causing the circuit to overload. My husband made it very clear he wanted the circuits balanced and his office separate.
8. Bob used a power tool for many nuts for the ground and neutral screws on the circuit panel; the screws were overtightened and stripped.
9. Bob reused an old work box for the new location in the Powder Room.
10. Bob stated we had to have a plate on the wall in the Powder Room, which we found out afterwards was not needed.
11. Bob left an outlet on the wall behind the pantry that was not needed, which required cutting a hole in our new pantry cabinet for no reason.
12. Bob had no plan whatsoever for the new circuit panel; he used almost all of the circuits and we were charged per curcuit. My husband reminded him that we still needed to redo/rewire the Master Bedroom/Bathroom as well as the entire basement and trusted that he had a plan.
13. Bob was careless installing lights and switches, which caused us to incur additional drywall repair charges.
14. Bob mislabeled the circuit panel even after two attempts (the second attempt was written on a piece of paper he gave us).
15. Bob told my husband he would take the 250 ft. of 12-2 wire we bought and was going to return to the store without any consideration of giving a discount.
We paid Bob over $8,000 in good faith thinking the work he did was done correctly and according to code. Bob was so quick to condemn the electricians who left an open junction box in the Family Room wall, yet he had no problem leaving wires near the same place with no care that was a fire hazard. Considering we have found that a large majority of the electrical work Bob did in our home was inadequate and below standards and because we are not running a charity to fund the new truck he purchased, we would consider it fair that Bob return $4,000 to us. After deducting the $1,000 check we have already received from Bob, the balance due us is $3,000. We had to incur additional expense, much more than $1,000, to correct his inadequate work and it has set us back considerably on our renovations. My husband also took off almost two full days of billable work to help fix the problems and chase down wires.
Bob left our house at risk. I am not sure if he knowingly did this substandard work on purpose because he just didn’t care or if he did not know what he was doing.
We are requesting that Bob be an honorable business owner and forward a cashier’s check to our home address. We have talked to our good friends, who we referred Bob to as well as realtor, who referred him to us, and found out he no longer will do business with Bob for some of the same reasons I listed above. Do the right thing and then I can give reviews that state there were some issues with the work Bob did, but he made it right.
