I have to admit that I did not check Roger Hill’s licensure before hiring him to install and connect two upright 118-gal. Manchester propane tanks to our new 24-kW Generac residential generator and then run a new line to fuel our gas log fireplace. He completed the work in stages as required for generator connection, inspection, and start-up, and again after the tanks were filled. All work was performed very professionally and (to my surprise!) in very timely manner, despite having to make a 45-minute drive over a range of mountains each time.
I am a very fussy homeowner, and so I worried about what these gas lines, which needed to be installed above ground to avoid large tree roots, would look like when done. I also worried about the breaking of shrubbery branches during his installation of two new propane tanks — their edges being just a few behind the trunks of two beautiful 9’ shrubs. That was the only place they could be placed to meet County codes, and I didn’t want to sacrifice those large shrubs! All my worrying was for nothing bc Roger and his helper took appropriate care in doing all of it.
Several gas company employees who have had reason to stop by, as well as our County Inspector and my Generac dealer, have all remarked on what a beautiful job he did. Even I, being a female homeowner, appreciate how neatly he installed our above-ground gas piping and how he was even able to position the tanks a little further away from our shrubs’ trunks than had been expected! I’ve also been told that Roger used the very best parts, unlike most gas pipe installers.
Precision Gas Piping charged me $3800 for two NEW 30” diam. tanks, setting them up, and connecting them to our new backup generator and fireplace. The new fireplace hookup had to go through an ext wall and into and across our crawlspace. This fee I know included $2400 for the tanks and still was $200 less than two other quotes I had received, one directly from a gas company and the other as part of a total package offered by a Generac dealer. The dealer’s quote included much cheaper used tanks, and both of the others would not have provided me with the slightly slimmer 30” tanks made by Manchester that would fit better between our shrubs and the garage. I’m so thankful I hired Roger to do this job for us. He was so professional and also very considerate! He was the only one I found willing to come out here multiple times for this job and also order those slimmer tanks for me.
I know Roger is totally professional in his work and that he used to be a Home Inspector in Charlottesville, VA. I doubt he would do this kind of potentially volatile work without being licensed. Next time I hire a contractor, I do plan to check on his or her license. However, after having used Precision Gas Piping very recently (Oct 2022), I most highly recommend calling this company for a quote on any kind of gas piping. Every time I walk around the garage side of our house now, I feel so GOOD when I look at our 18+ feet of newly installed gas piping bc it’s so nice and level, very neatly painted, and I love the hefty, olive green valve that does something important, I’m sure, besides looking impressive!
