    Kitchen and bedroom remodel
    $8,100
    Verified Hire

When he came in he did a fantastic job understanding my wants and needs. Throughout it all he was always nice-mannerisms were never the issue. The issues were with the work. The job should have taken no more than a week after he received the insurance payment. We had already been in a hotel for a month. After having payment for over a week he told us he was almost done. WE went to the house and we immediately had issues. He had promised us to: replace the walls (they still had 99.9% moisture when he was giving us the estimate), replace upper and bottom cabinets, countertops, 8 ft bar, replace subfloor in kitchen and closet, replace floors in kitchen and master bedroom/bath and paint the kitchen. We also asked him to fix a hole in our bathroom shower. When he sent a picture to the insurance company showing completion the job was nowhere near professional or complete. He told me if I would just tell insurance I was happy then he would get the payment and make it right. I told him I was unable to do that but got a partial payment sent out as our funds at this time were very limited to start the project over. He did fix the hole in the shower wall and subfloor to standards to my knowledge. The master floors were not down yet. The kitchen was a nightmare. The major thing I was concerned about was having usable storage and he promised me a "L-shaped" 8 ft bar. In the end, he took 1 long cabinet and put it out over my carpet on 2x4 without any storage underneath. He said he would give me an island instead and sent me pictures to choose. He gave me 1 small drawer in the cabinet between the fridge and stove. He put a cabinet where the dishwasher should be. He did not do the top cabinets and when asked why was told "it's too much work with the vent a hood so we decided not to". He didn't paint and when asked why was told he didn't know where to stop as the kitchen and living area are 1 room. We never discussed what happened to replacing the walls. The bottom cabinets that were put in were top cabinets that were too big and cut down to fit. These were not real would, therefore were splitting where it was cut. The baseboards were 2x4 boards. He closed up where the dishwasher goes and said that it was leaking. I explained to him that you don't just decide I am not going to have a place for a dishwasher and he agreed. We decided that since we needed a dishwasher he would get 1 in exchange for not doing the top cabinets. The countertop was broken during installation and screwed down through the top. The floors were cheap squares and not a wood look we had discussed and, when installed they covered up our dryer vent to outside. He did come over the next day to cut the hole in the floor. I know some of it was subcontractors and some was his buying the wrong items to begin with. He did take the kitchen back out and left us without water in our kitchen for 2 days. We did end up with a dishwasher and a used fridge (we settled on a fridge for exchange of repayment for extra hotel expenses). He put down a pretty decent floor in the kitchen but did not finish in between the kitchen and bedroom. The carpet finally got laid about 2 weeks after being back in our home and the 2nd payment. At the end of Feb (mind you-he has now been in our house for 6+ weeks with money) he still was not done. The excuses were endless-truck broke down, in car accident, got stuck at a job that took longer than expected, new truck broke down, death in family. When we parted ways our kitchen floor was 97% done, the bottom cabinets were there but not installed, he decided to start the top cabinets after all and took 1 side out which left my vent a hood sitting on my stove for a weekend, carpets were done and the hole in the bathroom was fixed. Even the carpet and floors which were almost done were not completed. (we have floor vents as mobile home) we had to buy vents as they were either covered or left open. 1 vent was replaced by them. He did hand a big cabinet he had purchased which was way too big for the kitchen itself but fit on another wall to make extra storage. No sign of an island. After his saying for week he was coming over to finish the job and it not getting done, we decided we had enough and parted ways. I feel we gave him ample chances to make the job right. Now we are left with little money to finish the job ourselves while he has over $5k I pulled up the insurance documents he sent to me and noticed that the insurance is under Pro Fence not Pro Builders. This was our first time dealing with contractors and I learned a lot in all the wrong ways unfortunately.
