My “four day job” from August is half way finished in late October. Chris Van Natta started the demo of my driveway and couldn’t do it so he brought in a professional “friend” to finish the demo.
No driveway. No forms. No gravel. No sign of anyone for days. We were parking down the street.
The driveway debris was removed from my property and piled along the road a block away. Of course, neighbors connected the dots and the local police knocked on my door. Dumping charges were looming at $500 a square foot.
One Saturday, a few weeks later, Chris Van Natta shows up with six or seven guys and they start buzzing around, flicking 2x4s and rebar around. Chris Van Natta comes to my door with his cell phone and asks me to talk to his concrete supplier.
Chris Van Natta was planning to have concrete poured in two hours. I told the supplier that forms haven’t even been built yet. The supplier replied saying “He does this all of the time.”
Cement arrives. Forms weren’t completed. No gravel was used. No traffic plan. The road was blocked. At 47 years of age, I thought I had heard every profane term known to humanity. Chris Van Natta was letting the profanity fly.
Chris Van Natta didn’t order enough cement. This is surprising since the driveway is probably only two inches thick in spots. No walkway to the front door and a ditch between my partial driveway and the street.
Eventually, Chris Van Natta returned and promised that the work would be finished that day. He promptly left. A cement truck arrived an hour later and Chris Van Natta had one day laborer and one finisher on site. No flaggers. Cement truck waited an hour and then a traffic engineer showed up, they spoke and they both left.
Chis Van Natta texted me later saying he fired the guys that sent the mud back. Chris Van Natta thought one guy with a wheelbarrow and a concrete finisher could move seven yards of mud and manage traffic at the same time.
Also during this “job”, most of his employees were telling me how they haven’t been paid by Chris Van Natta in weeks.
Finally, in early October, someone named Rob showed up and took all of Chris Van Natta‘s tools until he gets paid. He left me a note saying he would finish the work for $1,700. He apologized for all of the “ridiculousness” and told me the job is officially abandoned. He also called me Craig.
Winter is coming and I have a mud path to my front door and a six foot long and twenty foot wide ditch between the street and my driveway.
