By Thomas B.June 3, 2022permitted plans$8,500
I hired Pro Star Builders to draw up plans and obtain a building permit from the city. The process took longer than I expected, but I believe this had more to do with COVID than Pro Star. In our agreement my fourth and final payment was due after approval from the city on my plans. I was told over the phone that my plans had been approved and I provided my final payment. When I went to the city to pull the permit I learned that my plans had not been approved and for approval I needed to add a sprinkler system into my plans. When I let Pro Star know, they told me it would cost more to add the sprinkler system into my plans. My point of view is that I paid my final payment which was due after approval from the City, yet I still don't have approval from the City. I am now being told that it will cost about $2,000 more to add the sprinklers into the plans even though our contract was for permitted plans. His excuse was that construction always cost more than what you are quoted. At the very least I should get my final payment back until the plans are approved. If you do chose to work with them, I would not provide any payments until you have confirmed that, that portion of the project has been completed and signed off by whoever needs to sign off on it.

We chose Pro star Builders for a large bathroom and kitchen project that took 2+ months. It was a fantastic decision because the crew treated us like family, were incredibly communicative, and professional, kind and did a fantastic job. Even when they did the initial demolition, they left our house swept and ready for us to walk through. It’s a best case scenario for having contractors in your house everyday. When it comes to design they are fantastic, and helped us make decisions that really improved the look and feel of our space. We couldn’t be happier with the final outcome! Highly recommended!!!!

We couldn’t be happier with our new kitchen. The process was so much easier than anticipated and the job was completed in the time promised. They scheduled and coordinated every little detail and our home was left clean and neat each afternoon.
Professional, friendly, organized and absolutely amazing workmanship and top of the line materials. We talked about this kitchen project for over 10 years and it came out better than we ever imagined. Thank you to everyone at Pro Star Builders for creating our dream kitchen. -

Let me start off by saying these guys know what they are talking about. Seriously, you will not get a more honest kitchen design company. The quality of their vendors is super top notch. They assisted us in cabinet selection, material selection, and installation. Super precise, amazing team to work with! Will be referring everyone looking to redesign a kitchen or bathroom!

Hiring Pro Star was the worst mistake Heidi, the homeowner and I have ever made & they deserve 0 stars. More than one 5-star review was written by Pro Star employees.
Dishonest, untrustworthy, unethical, rude, sexist, insulting, & unprofessional. The person we had to work with used the (false) name of "Ryan" & oversold his company on their quality work & never providing a business license. Pro Star is "NOT ACCREDITED" with the BBB & has more than one complaint: https://www.bbb.org/us/ca/encino/profile/building-contractors/pro-star-builders-inc-1216-1082283
"Ryan" said the remodel of a small kitchen & dining room, 2 tiny bathrooms & laying yard pavers would take 6 weeks at an insane price. As it would take longer & cost more no matter who we hired Heidi signed the agreement. Others quoted $60,000-$120,000 yet Pro Star robbed us of $211,000-our life savings & never once provided a written receipt, saying "We don't feel we need to do that.".
Demo began, then days went by each week with no work done. Contacts to "Ryan" was ignored, or responded "You're on the schedule." a "schedule" we never saw. A Thurs. call MIGHT get us work the following Monday, leaving us with half a home, breathing dust for 4 days & nights.
No kitchen, dining room & only 1 bathroom, our garage was used to store supplies, fixtures & toilet for a full month. With Heidi suffering from multiple severe & complicated health issues, 3 renters & 2 elderly dogs, this was reprehensible. "Ryan's" solution-a small hotplate that 4 grown adults were supposed to use.
Explaining the problems, "Ryan" made it about himself, whining lies & excuses: "I'm doing my best.", "I can't be micromanaged.", later accusing us of "Throwing rocks on me.". And whenever we did point out changes that needed to be done his answer was "That's not easy.". No, 4 people sharing 1 small bathroom & sink for some 2 mo. isn't easy. Our front yard used for storage & construction, & personal item & front door sill broken.
"Ryan's" incompetence allowed 3 pallets of pavers to be unloaded & left in a shared driveway, by a fire hydrant-a clear disregard for the law, HOA rules, safety & common sense. Told this was unacceptable & to move them immediately, he responded with a startled "Who, ME?! That's not part of my job." & literally walked away from the potential disaster he himself created.
All 3 rooms had to be redone. "Ryan" didn't leave a space for the our dishwasher. His solution: not to replace the installed cabinet(s) with the dishwasher to existing connections next to the kitchen sink, rather to re-demo the adjoining wall, & run new electrical & plumbing lines so it could be installed in the dining room! Everything had to be redone-including the dining room cabinets placed a near 2 feet too high, due to cutting labor efforts. Unable to go above his head as no direct phone number or Mgr.'s true name was ever provided, to cover his tracks & protect his company. The city inspector found work was largely done wrong or not at all asking "No work done why am I here?".
Conference calls between "Ryan", Heidi & me, resulting in him screaming at us as he would deny any responsibility. Worse in person his insults disrespect & sexist pandering to Heidi (a highly educated doctor who runs two businesses simultaneously) of her not understanding his personal suffering: "You can multi-task because you're a woman-I can't.". Mentioning addition problems, his pointing of fingers in our face & shouting at us-in our own home-"YOU'RE LIARS!" before walking away again.
"Ryan" called Heidi-on Easter Sunday, she in the hospital with a very serious health issue, pressuring her to sign off on the job. The master bathroom hadn't been touched, & we were told that the contract didn't include any remodel work beyond new floor tile-but they would do it all-for a hefty price. According to his "experts" we had traces of mold in the bathroom, but once again it was "no problem" & high numbers began to fly to fix it. Another contractor's mold test showed NONE.
beTrash & e-waste left, & needed to properly disposed of. "Ryan" told us "So throw it out." & only after told the contract stated that a clean up will be done did he send someone.
At sign off, "Ryan" tried to get $1000 "for overages" he couldn't explain & had no paperwork to back up. We said not another penny, a quick private call was made to his office & that "overage charge" was "waved as a courtesy".
Koral called about Heidi's poor Yelp review, promising "all problems corrected & 'a substantial refund'" (bribe) to get it removed. But a 2nd call from a male rudely telling us "You'd better take that review down because we've done all the corrections we're going to do for you." & "I know nothing of any refund-let alone a substantial one!" & the review stayed up.
No price matching: "We'd lose a 15-20% profit & file for bankruptcy."
Pro Star is No Star.
