Pete requested payment for designs and permit process for a add on to our home. He was responsive for the first month. Then it was NO response for long periods of time (months) with lost of excuses when he would finally respond! Do NOT use him, he’s a total scam artist.

Outraged! We initiated a home remodeling project with Peter Barnum (PTB DesignBuild) based on his very enthusiastic interest and creative ideas. Unfortunately, the project was initiated, but never finished. The project was abandoned with large piles of debris, incomplete electrical and carpentry work, and a large portion of the original proposed work not even started. Further, we received a letter of delinquent payment from a sub-contracting window manufacturer that is now placing a lien on our home due to failure of Peter Barnum/PTB DesignBuild to pay in full, even though we have documentation showing we paid Peter Barnum the full amount for the cost of windows and installation. We have tried to contact Peter on numerous occasions, and although once very responsive, has not returned any of our calls or texts. We would not recommend and caution against any business with Peter Barnum/PTB DesignBuild for any work in construction/design/remodeling as he and his company have failed to perform contracted work responsibly and professionally.

We had a very similar experience like the other post described. He was very responsive at first and then just disappeared didn’t respond to messages and was only interested in collecting his money. He is a smooth talker and when we first met with him he seems charming professional and polite. Don’t be fooled. He took advantage of us. He was caught multiple times in overcharging and lied when confronted. He lied about having a contractors license and I’ve since found out he has a lawsuit filed against him in Santa Cruz county. We had to hire our own subs to finish the job. The subs he used were also not professionals and would just show up at odd hours sometimes late at night without any warning. I feel sorry for anyone who hires him as he is unprofessional and dishonest. Buyer beware. Not worth the headache.

Peter Barnum(PTB Build Design, Aptos) did a great job at first, but has completely abandoned the last 10% of our home remodel and stopped retuning our calls, texts and e-mails. No communication at all for weeks. His excuse before he cut communication was that he had other bigger jobs to complete. We’re left to finish what we can ourselves and hire out to other contractors the things we don’t know how to do, like completing the flooring and finish carpentry inside. We haven’t received a final accounting of the work vs contracted payments despite multiple requests from us and broken promises from Peter, but he doesn’t seem to care. So I would not recommend hiring Peter Barnum. He will leave you the minute a more profitable job comes his way.

I will never use PTB again! Same experience as the other reviews here - very responsive at first until the checks clear. Job remains unfinished and I cannot get ahold of Peter after months of trying. Scam, scam , scam!
