BEWARE. I had a horrible experience with this company that leaves me feeling as though they are more focused on selling their "service plans" and their overpriced repairs than actually servicing customers.
I couldn't get my whole house fan to start so before the weather got unbearably hot I called Right Now Air. I had a Friday appointment. Starting on Monday, their office staff started trying to convince me that I should sign up for their service plan. I agreed to sign up for it as they promised it would save me 25% off my upcoming service.
Friday May 4 I had two smart thermostats installed and had the tech look at my whole house fan. He told me that the whole house fan motor was bad and that I would need to buy a new fan or a new motor. I asked for quotes and he said his office would send the quotes.
On Monday May 7, I was quoted between ~$800-3000 for a new whole house fan, depending on model. I told them I couldn't afford that so I would like a quote to have the motor replaced on my existing fan. I was also unhappy with the invoice amount from the previous Friday because upon reviewing the bill, my husband and I noticed that we had been given a 10% discount, rather than the 25% promised. I ended up receiving a call back from their owner, John, who reviewed the situation with me and let me know he would put a credit on my account for the additional amount of the discount I was owed, and I could use that credit towards replacing my whole house fan motor. They told me they would need to send someone back to my house to get the model number for my motor, which happened on May 15.
I received a total of three more calls, in which they "updated me" that they were "searching really hard" for a motor that would fit. I was notified on Friday June 1 that no motor could be found to fit my fan and that I would need to purchase a new whole house fan (again, approx $800 for the cheapest replacement option). I told them I would just have to go without the fan. Note that I am still at that point signed up for their "maintenance plan" at $29 a month which promises faster turnaround on service calls, "free" maintenance calls (2 per year) and a 50% discount on repairs. This is a 2-year minimum contract.
Yesterday, June 5, I asked my somewhat-handy (but certainly not HVAC certified!) friend to look at the fan to see if we could replace it ourselves at a more reasonable price. He climbed up in my attic and asked for a flashlight, a crescent wrench and a voltage meter. There was a piece of string tangled up in my whole house fan blades. It was bright purple. You couldn't miss it (well actually, the Right Now Air techs missed it on their previous 3 trips into my attic.) He loosened the bolt on top of the fan and untangled the string. He then checked all the wiring with the voltage meter. He pulled the chain that is attached to the switch in the attic. He also found a replacement motor available on Amazon for our fan (while sitting in the attic waiting for me to bring him the crescent wrench).
The fan works just fine. I used it yesterday evening and again this morning.
I am left with the strong impression that Right Now Air did ZERO legitimate diagnostic work on my fan because they would rather remove a perfectly good fan that needed a tiny bit of troubleshooting and make a $800-$3000 sale.
I called and updated the office staff. I asked them to cancel my service contract and whether I had been charged any monthly premiums. I asked to speak to the owner about my concerns, namely that I didn't ever want one of his employees touching any of my equipment ever again. I received a call back this morning from his office staff. John will not be speaking to me but he apparently will "address the issue" with his field techs. I will not be getting any adjustment to my invoice from May 4 because I am not entitled to it as my service contract is being canceled. Fine. I asked if I had been charged any monthly premiums. I was assured that no, I had not. Upon hanging up I checked my credit card statement and SURPRISE I had been charged a premium for the service plan on May 25. I attempted to call back to get that reversed but now Right Now Air hangs up and won't answer my phone calls, so I guess I have to file a chargeback.
Please, do not use this company for any service to your HVAC equipment. They seem to suffer from a complete lack of integrity in their business practices.
