Working with Gary has been quite a saga. I will start with the relatively positive part which is that the actual construction quality seems good for the most part, and he showed up and got the work done with some urgency.
On the flip side, the contracting, invoicing and billing aspect of working with Gary was a nightmare. Aside from the fact that just about every discussion was a veiled or outright negotiation in which he avoided responsibility for things that were obviously in scope, here are some specifics: (a) his form contract was full of spelling errors, incomplete paragraphs, different prices/labor rates, and most importantly lack of specificity. I had to heavily edit to make sure we had our scope reasonably spelled out in writing. Good thing I did because (b) Gary quickly worked through the budget and went long periods without calculating where he was versus budget. And then (c) when he realized he was way over budget, according to him at least, he tried to renegotiate our deal and asked for more than $100K extra for the originally agreed scope. Then finally (d) we got to enjoy the emotional roller-coaster of him threatening to walk off the job without finishing while he tried to push things that were in scope to be considered 'change orders' and charge us extra for them.
Finally now, with the project done, we have a one year 'warranty' on the work completed. There are a couple of issues that have come up - to be expected. I have notified Gary and tried to reach him but he doesn't respond to my texts and hangs up when I call.
