We signed a contract September 2022, didn’t dig until December despite promising in October dig that when we signed the contract. There hasn’t been one thing done in a professional manner since the hole was dug. The tile was installed poorly in January and then left it and he didn’t touch it again. We received excuse over excuse why they weren’t working during that time. In that time we found multiple issues (exposed rebar, bond beam not up to code, deep end less than 5’ deep when it’s supposed to be a 6’ pool, etc). We tried to get them to come up with a plan to fix and would get no reply. Now we’re 8.5 months in with no pool and no end in sight. $60,000 paid out with no action being taken. We’re being completely held hostage by their terrible work. The whole thing needs to be redone and they won’t return our money so that we can hire somebody else nor will they come up with a plan to fix their defective work. This is the stuff construction nightmares are made of. I only wish I could give zero stars.

I’m so pleased with the outcome of our pool. Living in Florida, having a pool is a must! Thanks to Bart and Russell Builders for making our backyard dreams come true and a job well done!

By Philip F.July 7, 2022Build a pool
We contracted with Bart Piniaz and Russell Builders to build us a pool while our house was under construction. The result was horrific to the point that we had to redo the entire pool within a year or so of moving in. The marcite was not done properly and it was so rough that it put holes in inflatables and the grandkids wouldn’t go in since it hurt their feet. The tile starting coming off in places. The plumbing was done incorrectly since he plumbed it so the heated water went to the main pool instead of the spa. The jets were put in upside down so that when you turned them on it blew the water out of the pool and spa. The cement or whatever is used for the coping around the pool started to crack and come off. I would never use Bart Piniaz or Russell Builders in any capacity ever again.
Response from Russell Builders Inc March 22, 2023Phil, although quite negative, we appreciate your review. We have undergone some management changes and are working on choosing the correct subcontractors. At the time of your project, you were aware that your pool was the very first one we had built; the inexpensive pricing was reflective of that. Unknowingly, some of the subcontractors that were hired to do your pool were subpar; we heavily relied on their expertise (or lack thereof) to guide us through our first build. That ultimately falls on us as we chose to hire them to represent us and our company. We have partnered with subcontractors who are at a higher caliber and warranty their work. We apologize for your dissatisfaction. It is pertinent to this public review to mention that yourself and your wife were not the easiest customers to work with. Thankfully there is not a forum in which clients are being reviewed; if there was, I would have to mention the belittlement, harassment, and torture our employees and subcontractors had to endure from your wife. It is incredibly difficult to understand how people can be treated so terribly. How people can get satisfaction from insulting someone that works hard to make a living. Even worse, how a customer will tell their contractor that they don't care if they are in the hospital with their wife who is undergoing cancer treatment. But, we would prefer to take the higher road and not expose the details of the horrific treatment yourself and your wife are capable of. We genuinely hope your next experience with a contractor goes smoothly and results in a positive review.

Our experience with Bart Piniaz at Russell Builders has been the stuff that nightmares are made of. They started the job in December after guaranteeing us an October dig date to get us to sign the contract.
After digging the hole, we waited 2 weeks for rebar and another 2 weeks for gunite. Why dig a hole and wait an entire month to shoot when you tell us your concern is loosing the hole to collapse. Shouldn't you be managing the scheduling of your subs and schedule better than that?
However, that was only the beginning of the nightmare. They dripped along in work taking another 2 months to do piping and tile. During the tile phase is where things really started to go down hill.
We noticed that the tile was 2" above our walls in places and lower than the gunite wall in others. Not only that, but it was crooked as a dogs hind leg. We were then told that we couldn't have matching tile for our steps. WHAT?!
After repeated attempts to get them back to the site to fix the bad work and finish our pool, our frustration were growing. That's when we started to notice major structural issues including: walls as thin as 3.5", the 6' deep pool was only going to be 54" to the waterline, exposed rebar in multiple places and rebar throughout the pool that doesn't have the required 2.5" of cover to prevent staining our plaster and spalling the concrete. When questioned about this, Bart didn't think any of this was an issue. When I asked him what code was for bond beam wall thickness he said "I don't know". This is not what you want from your "licensed" pool builder.
The long story short is that we are now 270 days +/-into this contract, which we were told would take 6 months from contract signing, and all we have to show for it is a concrete hole in the ground that needs to be removed at a cost of 25k and a bank account that is 62k lighter.
Not only that but they have done nothing to refund our money or provide an engineer stamped solution to their mess. Our yard and our money are being held hostage to a terrible builder and I regret the day I ever met this company. I have detailed in video the entire story the clock app using hashtags with this company's name. Do your research and then keep moving past Russell Builders and Bart Piniaz.
