Working with Michael Behm was one of the worst experiences of our lives. It was death by a thousand cuts. Choose anyone else.
We had an insurance project that took about 11 months to complete, from start of work to the last invoice being paid. And at no point during that time, did Michael give any consideration to our lives or our needs. After tearing down our ceiling for 4 hours, rendering our family room (a full 1/3 of our home) useless for the entire winter, Mike’s team sealed the room off with plastic and left for the next 8 weeks. Returning only after we begged them to come back and put up a temporary ceiling so we could at least access the space. (Mike claims he told me this was the plan and I agreed to forego use of the room where our family of four with two toddlers spends 90% of our time.)
And it was all downhill from there. The lack of communication was truly atrocious. We were still living in our home and Mike wouldn't tell us who was coming to our house or when. We would ask, and he would promise to let us know and then we’d hear nothing. Or he’d text a snarky response about “not usually having to tell homeowners” whatever we were asking about.
We had contractors just walk right in because no one told them the house was occupied. That was the same contractor we had to ask to stop working because they were literally doing the wrong job.
When I tried to talk to Behm about my frustrations with the lack of communication, his response was that they didn't have a single bad review and we were the only clients that had any problem with them. And then he ghosted us for the remainder of the project. Literally wouldn’t talk to us about anything. Left everything up to his partner who was meant to be filling the GC role.
We ended up losing a full day of work because instead of talking to us about finishes, they just made them. Without our input. Just decided what it should look like, bought materials accordingly and spent a full day covering beams just to take them down when we realized what was happening.
And then we ended our experience with Behm sending us an invoice for approximately $7k over the contracted price. Which, of course, he proceeded to fight with us about for a month because we insisted that he abide by the contract he wrote.
Worst part? The finished product sucks. It’s incredibly sloppy with visible seams, nail holes, mismatched wood stains, warped boards, and bumpy sheetrock. Makes us sad every time we look at it.
