Scoggin Excavating

Scoggin Excavating was recommended by Wheaton Water Wells when we discovered a water line leak from our well on 9 Oct 20. Curt from Scoggin responded quickly and seemed very nice. He told my wife we would need to move a lot of stuff and would return the next day to dig up the water line to find the source of the leak. He brought his excavator later that day and parked on my property without permission. I returned from the Kenai peninsula that evening and his excavator was parked where I normally parked. They returned at 8am on Saturday morning upset we hadn’t taken fence down and got everything moved. They never specified what time they would return when talking to my wife. When he knocked on the door, I said I was waiting for daylight so I could see to take fence down. By the time I got dressed and outside, Curt and his helper had destroyed part of my fence and threw my personal property around the yard. I finished moving the rest of the fence, moved some other stuff and moved my truck so he could drive his excavator to the water line. Without discussing with me his plan, he drove the excavator at an angle to the well pipe and started digging up my asphalt parking pad and digging down to the water line with his full size excavator. In reality, a mini-excavator would have been more appropriate for the job. Digging at a right angle to the paved parking pad would have been more appropriate also. But in his haste to make a quick large amount of money, he was impatient and showed no concern for my property. Instead of digging a hole just wide enough for a person to get to the waterline connection to the well pipe, he dug a a hole at least six feet wide by 12 feet long. It took them about 15 minutes to repair broken pipe connection. Then he started filling hole back in. Never compacted until he had put all dirt back in instead of every couple feet which prevents serious sink holes. Then he dragged all the brush back towards parking pad and where he had destroyed the asphalt. He destroyed approximately a 4’x8’ section of my parking pad. Instead of using grates or boards to spread out the weight of excavator to protect from damaging pavement, he actually made multiple turns with excavator to do the most damage he could to asphalt. After he finished, collected payment, he left with his pickup and left excavator parked in my way for another 24 hours. When he came back to bring copy of receipt and pick up excavator, I mentioned I had someone coming out to give me an estimate on pavement repair, he had no comment. I’m thinking I will be filing in small claims court case for his recklessness and damaging actions. His price, I found out afterwords was outrageous. The job should have been 1/3 of the price he charged. Lesson learned: Never hire those not bonded and insured. This guy took advantage of an elderly lady in trouble! It’s sad we have businesses in this day and age with no morals or ethics!
