I would not recommend Sheppard Quality Home's (SQH) unless you are buying a house that has already been built. That way you know what you are buying.
I purchased a home through SQH. It was in the framing stages and I requested some changes and additions. Chris said that would be no problem and that he loved to customize. I paid for a lot of extras, but I didn’t get everything I paid for (what we agreed to). Instead it felt like I got whatever Chris felt like doing. Almost the entire experience was unpleasant. Chris talked a good game, but had no follow through. Chris told me in the beginning I could have anything I wanted as long as I paid for it, but he questioned almost everything I asked for with a smart aleck remark. He didn't follow through with much of what he said: not the design drawings, not what we agreed to in our sit downs and not even what they told the VA appraiser. My $335K home didn't even have vanity lights in the downstairs master ensuite. He went months without getting me information he promised so that I could make the decisions he said were time sensitive. The project was 2.5 months behind schedule. I never complained about the schedule, but when I brought my concerns to him their only response was that they were sorry about the delay. In the end I did cancel some requested items due to the delay because we were supposedly a week away from closing and I still didn’t have the info he promised me.
When I brought my concerns directly to SQH I was dismissed, but when my realtor brought my concerns to them they wanted to know why I didn’t go directly to them. Furthermore, in the end many of the finishings were not done in a good workman like manner. His corrections were worse than what it started out to be. I went ahead and closed in good faith assuming that Chris would make it right. After we closed I asked if I could have a face to face with him (as opposed to communicating through his admin or realtor) since I received the opposite of everything I asked for. I thought that maybe items were getting lost in translation. I was told that he didn’t have the time to meet me.
This was my first new build and it was not a good experience. Don’t buy a home with SQH unless it has already been completed. Don’t assume that he is good to his word and Do get everything in writing. He still won’t do what was agreed to but at least you’ll have it documented. Don’t assume that it will be easier to customize your home the way you want it during a build with Chris. It will be easier, more reliable and probably cheaper in the long run to hire professionals to customize your home after it has been built.
