DO NOT HIRE SCOTT SMOOT. He is a high pressure salesman and a hot head. He blew up emotionally, irrationally, and with profanity and physical bullying and intimidation when I objected to his moving and damaging my sprinklers without my authorization, telling me it was a "personal attack" on him as a "creative person" when I expressed different preferences from his, my preferences were "boring," and it wouldn't be a "Scott Smoot job" if I got what I wanted. He then abandoned the job, leaving me with a broken, completely non-functional sprinkler system that was previously fully functional, forcing me to file a CSLB complaint. He violated several laws (mostly Business and Professions Code relating to Home Improvement contracts and Civil Code relating to Home Solicitation contracts). For instance, he collected a down payment exceeding 10% of the contract amount (taking $4000 on a $7900 contract) and omitted the required 3-day right to cancel language as well as other statutorily required language. After one day of work, he butchered my existing plants and trees far beyond what we discussed, displayed poor workmanship, used cheap materials, and kept asking for more and more money, e.g., for curbing, plants, sprinklers, tree trimming, etc., over and above the $7900 contract amount. Go with someone who observes the law and respects his clients. Do not hire Scott Smoot.
