    Build a house
    $400,000

Hired Chip Quick and scmb to build a house for my wife and I. The experience is one I would not wish on anyone. Our build took well over a year to complete. Chip had more excuses for delays than I have hair on my head. And the build errors were also countless.
First the foundation was much higher than what was expected. This would require much tall front and back porches. By the way the foundation took months to dig and complete. After the foundation was poured the ground for the crawl space was never leveled. The foundation for the front porch was completely forgotten about. That had to be completed at a later time.
It took several months before the main support was installed and the first floor and one side wall was completed. Mind you the winter and spring of this year were very mild and perfect for outside work.
Months later and more excuses the first floor framing was semi complete. Several framing mistakes had to be corrected. These included misplaced doors, short studs and uneven walls and wall joints. As the second floor was being completed more mistakes showed up. Doorways being too big or too small. Flooring supports were too short and a major second floor support was placed on first floor plywood with no support underneath, like shown in the plans. This took several months to remedy. Windows were framed off center and Chip had to be convinced they were not correct.
When the roof trusses were put on is when we realized what Chip had been trying to hide from. After the foundation was complete, no measured it. The roof trusses were ordered and they were short by three inches. According to scmb it took months for the truss company to come up with a fix. Remember that main support I told you about, well there is the reason it was not placed on a support.
So this whole time the framing and flooring have no roof. The floors were starting to buckle at the joints and grow black mold.
Let me divert and tell you about scmb and their work hours. They would show up around 11 and leave by 3. Also several time some of their employees were found to be smoking pot on the job. Generally they would show up for about two days a month. Like I said it took over 15 months to build a 1900 sqft home.
After more months of waiting the roof finally went on. And a couples months more when the shingles and the exterior of the house went on. The drywall contractors the plumber and electrician did a great job. Kudos to them.
As the drywall went up more framing errors showed themselves. The flooring was put in the entire house. We have no idea if the mold was cleaned up. As the house was being worked on, no covering was placed down on the flooring. Chip and his guys walked on the floor tracking in red clay along with every other type of construction dirt you can think of.
I am growing weary of all this typing so here are some high points. The main front picture window is off center, the master bath shower tiles are uneven. The rear decking not completed. The rear decking has construction stains on it. A outdoor fan was not installed correctly. The well pressure tank was not installed correctly.
Currently Chip has refused to complete our 12 month punch list. 12 months ended in Feb 2025

    Screened in deck addition
THE Best the NRV has to offer!

First, I cannot express how much I absolutely love SMCB. We had an idea in mind to add a new large section of a screened-in deck to our house. The owner, Chip, came and sat down with us and took the time to help us determine the best design for our deck to help make our idea a reality. Chip, as well as his laborers, are amazingly friendly and are very professional. Anytime we had questions about our deck's progress Chip was quick to answer any questions we had. One thing I really appreciated about Chip is that he would look at the work as if it was in his own home. So there were times when he would suggest changes to us that actually worked out better than we initially wanted. We never felt pressured by the company. If anything we truly felt the company was catering to what our wants were and even beyond that.

Chip is very knowledged and experienced in his craft and has shown that he can custom build just about anything we threw at him. The work SMCB does is without a doubt high quality. Though we only had SMCB add a deck addition to our home we keep the company in mind for any home renovations and/or improvements that we have. I have such high confidence and trust in the company that eventually we want them to build our next home.

I highly highly recommend Southern Mountain Custom Builders to the NRV!
