We have owned many houses in the East and West Coast and Stafford and Sons was perhaps the best builder that we have ever worked with. His crew was always on time, finished the work that they were scheduled to do each day, and cleaned up every day—something that I appreciate very much. Tom Stafford himself was always only a phone call/email away and would check in regarding large or small questions so that the job was completed exactly to my specifications and kept within budget. Speaking of budget, the job was completed under budget and on time. When we wanted to complete jobs ourselves as a wantabee DIYer, he left the job well prepared for success. We all worked together to get the job done and that is refreshing. We can’t believe that finally we’ve met a contractor that we feel is out to do a good job and takes pride in his work. I would hire him again (and probably will) without hesitation.

By Chris L.September 4, 2015master suite additionExceptional work!
Working with Tom of Stafford and Son Builders was a great experience. Tom added a Master Suite to my house. The job was on time and on budget. Tom is very good at keeping the project moving. There was never a day when progress wasn't being made. Tom was very detail oriented, he was at the job site everyday and sometimes twice a day. He kept up with all the trades men and me, letting me know where we were in the process and what's next. The quality of the work was exceptional. Even though its an addition, it is seamless. It looks like the original house, from the brick exterior to the hardwood floors. I highly recommend Stafford and Son Builders.

By MadelineAugust 24, 2015remodel a small powder room/bathroomHappy Customers
I recently had the opportunity to use Stafford and Sons Builders to repair and remodel a small powder room/bathroom adjacent to the Master Bedroom in my mother's home. The bathroom in question needed the floor replaced and the joist reinforced as a result of water damage. I happen to live 200 miles away from the site of the project and I coordinated it for my 86 year old mother. I contacted at least 8 contractors and scheduled estimates for the work Three showed up as scheduled and Tom was actually early, but he called first to see if it was okay. He took significant time looking into what needed to be done and he explained the scope of work. He was professional and available for follow up questions and e-mails. Although not the cheapest, he was the most responsive and I felt comfortable with him doing the job in my mothers home if I couldn't be on site.
My instructions were clear and a contract was provided within days. Tom also provided a follow up appointment to determine if additional work would be needed for the adjacent bathroom. During this visit he discovered a roof vent leak that was added to the job preventing future damage. The job started as scheduled and it was completed on time. Subcontractors arrived daily as scheduled as did Tom without incident. My mother and I were more than satisfied with the work completed and we would not hesitate to use Stafford and Sons again.

We live in the Fredericksburg area, but have this house in Virginia Beach. It is a garage apartment that was built in the 1920's that we use as a vacation house. Tom arrived when he said he would and talked with us about what we wanted to do with the little garage apartment. He seemed to understand that we wanted to keep its 1920 charm, but bring it up to date at the same time. He followed up with an estimate that was broken into tasks so we could see where the costs were going. Before we could sign a contract with him, a tornado tore the porch roof, some of the house roof and the chimney off the little house.
Tom came right out again to assess the damage and readjust his estimate. He worked with us and the insurance company to identify which tasks were covered by insurance and which were our upgrades. He also worked with our structural engineer and the insurance mitigation team to identify what needed to be addressed to ensure the house was safe to live in again. I have another house on the property that I just upgraded with new siding and HVAC. Since I wanted to match what I did on the other house, Tom worked with me to integrate the siding contractors and the HVAC contractors with his work. Tom was responsive to every phone call and worked to solve any problem along the way. He never put me off as some contractors do when a problem arises. He arranged for contractors to do the work in the optimum sequence. Some of his contractors were outstanding and some were just okay. His tile subcontractor for the bathroom and kitchen was fantastic and did a superb job. He has several carpenter/handymen on his payroll that are excellent and did much of the demolition and rough carpentry. They sealed up the holes in the roof right away. They did a lot of the fill in work along the way. Tom referred me to designers to help me redesign the kitchen and bathroom as well as select appropriate finishes, appliances and fixtures.
There were some additional tasks along the way that were not identified on the original contract. Tom charged me for the actual time and materials plus a percentage to cover his costs which I thought was very fair. Tom provided a reasonable level of protection for the worksite. We did not suffer any theft during the contract work. It was wonderful to be able to rely on a general contractor when we were not able to be there the whole time ourselves.

We hired Tom to complete an addition/renovation project for us and are extremely happy with the results. We have a disabled child so built a first floor accessible bedroom suite to accommodate his care. The project also involved renovating existing space including removing a load-bearing wall, and adding a new deck. I was impressed with Tom from the first encounter. I had about 15 different contractors quote the project and Tom spent the most time looking at the project, taking measurements, and asking detailed questions others did not. When I told him what I did for work he then dropped three names of colleagues of mine that he had done work for and they all had very positive things to say about him when I asked. He put together a detailed and transparent quote and had a very competitive price. Tom was at the house daily throughout the project and was very attentive to detail ensuring everything was done with high quality craftsmanship. He was flexible when we wanted to make changes or additions, and fair and transparent in his pricing providing quotes from his vendors. He was responsive throughout via phone/text/email. All his workers, whether those he directly employs or subcontractors, were professional and respectful and we felt comfortable having them in our house. The final product turned out great and we couldn't be happier. Several of our neighbors have already had him complete projects for them as well. We definitely plan on using him again for our next project!
