We hired Leo from Stepman Homes to sand, fill and paint our new doors, windows, door and base trim in our home. When Leo provided us his estimate, we asked him if he had a professional and experienced crew; he said yes, he did. He brought a 17-year-old kid who had no experience who damaged our Mylar windows that now have to be re-covered, gauged the trim, did an inadequate fill job with sanding marks over numerous, freshly painted walls and left a horrendous mess. The second fellow who performed the caulking, did an okay job and left Stepman Homes before the project was even completed.
Leo insisted on using oil paint for the trim which would cause us to have to vacate the house for several days, due to noxious VOCs. During the estimate, Leo assured us we would only be out of our house for a week at most; we had to be out of our house for over three weeks at a substantial cost plus pet boarding. In addition to the job taking a month to complete, the finished work was flawed everywhere with running paint drips, unpainted areas, nicks and gauges. And, worst of all, painted over window debris and over-spray on half of our walls. These walls and our new mantel surface will require washing and priming before we can paint over it in latex paint, as latex won't stick to over-spray oil paint. when we arrived home we expected to see a lovely job for the price Leo charged us; what we saw, including a house that was left in the worst possible mess to clean, made my wife cry and me enraged at the prospect of the effort and money required to fix this hack's work. When we confronted Leo, he came back to fix a few issues but complained we were too picky and said he underbid the job and should have charged us more.
It was our bad we didn't check Stepman Homes and Leo out beforehand, as we trusted someone who knew him. It was a huge mistake. Make sure you get a minimum of five references before you hire contractors, or you might end up spending a fortune for your work and a fortune to fix it!
