Avoid. Unable to keep deadlines. Lack of transparency in business practices.
Steve Wong builder from San Jose worked on my addition as well as remodeling of a house I bought. Start date was 1/15/2018 and finish date was supposed to be 5/15/2018. He dragged on project for a painful 8 months, and inspection did not clear until 9/13/2018. Pushed back my move in date multiple times. I was in tears when on weekend before move in date, he didn’t even have a working plumbing/ tub for my family. After we finally move in July, we had to endure the kitchen being placed, dust and splinters on floor. His team is made up of 3 people, only one stayed with him the whole time. There was a lot of turnover of workers. Because Franklin his main worker worked really hard for him,I give 2 stars. Steve would rush them, and he himself is always rushed and tells me flat out once he didn’t have time to look into trash compactor that they installed that didn’t work and asked me to call repairman to fix it. Steve had trouble keeping deadlines or his word, saying he would come one day then last minute push it to another day, so on for months. It really took an emotional toll on me and my family. Apparently, according to his workers, he picked up too many jobs and had to disperse his 3 person crew, hence the delays. He won’t admit to any of it, lots of blaming other people like the designer, the cabinet maker, even the flooring people for the delays. He was also not upfront about his charges either, would not give me updates on invoice of things that were added on, even after asking him at least twice a month to do so. At the end, he finally gave me invoice almost 3 weeks and he added on stuff that we never agreed upon. If you are going to charge someone $5500 for electricals upgrade, (mind you electricals charges were already included in the original addition), he should really mention that and not surprise homeowner at the end. Worst part, roof shingles started falling off the edge of the new roof of addition, and I find out his crew did not seal or nail shingles properly, (probably because they were rushing to their next job) hence causing the pieces to fall down just a few months post-placement. I had to ask a professional roof inspector to come to inspect the roof and get him to come back and fix the problem. Even the kitchen cabinet maker and water softerner guy felt sorry for me and my family. I was naive and too trusting and did not ask for a penalty for not fulfulling deadlines in the original contract. Definitely recommend people do that and learn from my mistakes. There are a lot of decent honest contractors out there. Do your due diligence. Ask for references, include a monetary penalty for not meeting deadlines.
