I would advise seeking someone else for any contracting work. Working with Johnny Taylor for my renovations has been unbelievably difficult and it's truly all do to his lack of (appropriate) communication and defensiveness. While shifting deadlines and multiple pieces moving at once can be harder to navigate, what should never be neglected is clear, open, and respectful communication. When tasked to "write down everything" I'd like him to do, he has consistently flipped the script on what the proper avenue for communication is whenever I try to reach him (at first, it was call, then, when it came to me providing information about materials, items needed, it was email, then it was texting for giving addresses, and then circling back. At this point, I am texting, calling, and emailing every message I need to relay to him and somehow he still manages to tell me he didn't check messages when I see him in person at my home. It's confusing when I then ask if I should even bring things up to him in person when he asks me if I have questions/concerns because he will not take notes to follow up when an answer isnt readily available. He also assured me there were 5 ways of paying him before a contract was signed (1 including wiring funds). Then, when the first payment was due, the options provided were only 3 (no explanation as to why providing money by wire was no longer an option). I resolved to transferring funds to another account which would allow me to send a zelle which is a form of payment he accepts, along with credit/debit cards, which he says, in parentheses, is very expensive for him to process (something that should let him know he shouldn't offer that option upfront if he does not prefer it). I informed him over text, email, phone (2 times in 24 hours), and in person (1 time in the same 24 hours) that it would take 1-3 business days to process the transfer before I could zelle it to him. At this point, I should have known with his history of forgetfulness that he would call me throughout the day and ask me in person where the money was. He suggested that he "just wanted to make sure that he would be receiving the money," because he knew I was short on funds (which in truth, I just have a budget that can't be stretched). This was my tipping point. I told him that the money was being transferred multiple times at the point that he suggested I wasn't paying him as fast as he'd prefer because of money issues. To have him suggest this, all while the problem was with him not providing the proper information for payment made me so upset. I had to ask myself, why am I sitting here trying to convince someone I have money? If he distrusts me now, he won't believe me if I continue to tell him the only information I have: the money is being transferred to an account that supports zelle. In this mix of this conversation, when I mentioned that he gave me conflicting information about payment methods, he told me he always offered "every mode of payment." Emails he sent me with the invoice clearly state otherwise. He didn't agree with this truth. Moreover, four days ago, I asked him if the "end of the week" deadline for completing all of his work was still on. He literally replied "yeah, we should be able to do a final walk through end of day, Monday." ?????? No where in the world does Monday fall on a weekend. This isn't nearly one of the most outrageous things he's said this past month but I hope this illustrates his unrelenting willingness to not accept any fault for his communication. I would have been more than fine with an update telling me that the work will have to be pushed back until Monday, but instead he decided to turn Monday into the end of the week in order to not have to admit that he hadn't communicated any changes to the schedule with me. Now it is Monday. I ask him what time he'd be ready to meet with me for the walkthrough. "The walkthrough is supposed to be for Tuesday, who told you it was Monday?" I told him, he did, of course. Then he tells me that I can do a walkthrough at midnight if I'm so concerned about doing it on Monday as if it would be outrageous for me to be concerned about the state of my house before moving in on Wednesday. All in all, this man is the most unprofessional contractor but he is a professional gaslighter. It isn't the job that I am infuriated with, it's the way he carries himself and treats customers that is utterly shameful. I wouldn't recommend him to my worst enemy. DO NOT WORK WITH TEDEX COMPANY!
