I recently received this text message from Terry Deskin of Portrait Renovations when I did not allow him to show our kitchen remodel to one of his clients: “you guys are thieves, liars, and cons. To sum it all up white trash. I have shown 3 other kitchens to my high end remodel client and they were very impressed with all of them. Who needs you!!!!.” In my opinion, this comment alone exemplifies Terry Deskin’s pattern of unprofessional behavior, but over nearly six months I experienced further problems with unprofessional behavior, unreliable estimates, and inconsistent work product. I would also warn potential customers that I ran into a problem with Terry charging me extra, sometimes significantly extra, for items that took him more time than what he initially estimated. At times the estimates seemed grossly misleading because the bills he provided were much higher than the estimates, and he refused to lower his charges on most overage items. In one incident, Terry forced me to pay him for installing tile flooring that had to be removed, and charged me nearly twice the installation cost that he quoted me citing “start-up” costs. He incorrectly measured the refrigerator cabinet, forcing us to shove the refrigerator into place, and in turn bowing the wood cabinet. When I informed Terry about the issue he told me simply “it’s not my problem,” and refused to order a new cabinet. This problem with the cabinetry was in addition to incorrect cabinets that he ordered for our kitchen but blamed the cabinet company, while the cabinet company blamed him. Terry also refused to adhere to our agreement to be paid at the beginning middle and end of a job, requesting payment between these periods. We tried our best to keep Terry happy while he was working on our kitchen, but so many problems occurred that it became an untenable situation and ended badly. I had not planned to write a review until receiving Mr. Deskin’s text message to me, but I would warn any potential clients to think carefully before hiring him for your home improvement project.
